Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Shaping Up to Be the Cover Girl of 2019, With Time Magazine Next on Her Calendar

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez graces the cover of the April 1st issue of Time Magazine, donning her signature red lipstick within the iconic red border of the publication. “THE PHENOM,” the cover reads.

On Instagram, AOC expressed her disbelief over making the cover of Time only a year after working at a restaurant in Manhattan. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that those late nights on the 6 & 7 trains would lead to this,” she wrote, citing the transit lines that took her between home, work, and her future constituents. “All this attention gives me a lot of anxiety (my staff fought to get me to agree to this cover, as I was arguing against it), and still doesn’t feel quite real, which maybe is why I remain comfortable taking risks, which maybe is a good thing.”

While the author of the cover story considered her to be “the best storyteller in the party since Barack Obama,” she humbly downplayed that the publication had cast her as a phenom. “[My] story shouldn’t be a rare one. Because our collective potential as a nation can be unlocked when we’re not so consumed with worry about how we’re going to secure our most basic needs, like a doctor’s visit or an affordable place to live.”

A month ago, she was on the cover of Rolling Stone alongside her congressional peers Ilhan Omar, Jahana Hayes, and Nancy Pelosi for the magazine’s “Women Shaping the Future” issue; each politician had their own feature interview. In her interview, AOC gave her take on whether it’s fair to compare her social media savvy to Donald Trump’s. “Well, I think that there’s this rush to make that comparison, but any time media fundamentally changes, the first movers to recognize that change — and to learn it and to adapt to it — tend to have that first-move advantage,” she said. “So this is less about personality, less about Trump, and more about who has had the first-mover advantage.” In her understanding of social media — the AOC Twitter account has nearly 4 million followers — people are drawn to social media figures who are forthright, vulnerable, fearless, and adaptable.

Later this spring, AOC is set to be a superhero of sorts on the cover of the forthcoming comic book, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force: New Party, Who Dis??
