BELatina’s Weekend Recap: Latino Museum, Bad Bunny, Day of the Dead, and More

Happy Monday! And for those who celebrate: Happy Halloween!

That’s it. The holidays are officially upon us. With only one day shy away from Dia de Muertos, there’s no denying that our community is feeling the festivities approaching.

However, as things get more festive, we must still be aware of what is going on, especially if it’s our people making the headlines.

So, let’s take a look at what happened over the weekend.

Two locations for the Latino and Women’s Museum have been proposed

The Smithsonian Board of Regents recommended sites are both in Washington D.C. on the National Mall. One site is known as the South Monument, while the second site is more prominent and is known as the Tidal Basin.

“As of today, we are one step closer to achieving the dream of a long-awaited Latino Museum and Women’s Museum,” said Representative Tony Cárdenas.

California’s first Latina trial judge dies

Frances Muñoz, who happened to be the first Latina trial judge in California, died a few days ago. She was 92 years young. Her appointment as a trial judge took place on January 25, 1978, under Governor Jerry Brown. Muñoz was also known for her work as a public defender where, oftentimes, she represented young Latinos.

The law-defending Latina pioneer served for 23 years before retiring in 2001, according to the Los Angeles Times. May her family and friends find peace during this difficult time.

Bad Bunny, Selena Gomez, Karol G, and More are nominated for this year’s People’s Choice Awards

Music awards are starting to look a bit more diverse (but we still have a long way to go before it’s truly inclusive.) Nevertheless, in the meantime, we must celebrate nuestra gente and their recognition. For instance, this year’s People’s Choice Awards weren’t able to stay away from Latine talent. As expected, Bad Bunny is leading many categories. However, Selena Gomez, Karol G, Camila Cabello, Chencho Corleone, Rauw Alejandro, Shakira, Sebastián Yatra, Anitta, and Becky G were mentioned.

The winners will be announced on December 6. We wish all of them good luck!

The first Mexican American woman in Congress retires

Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard is retiring after 30 years in Congress. Roybal-Allard made history a few times. She, for example, was the first woman to chair the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the first Latina to serve as one of the chairs of a House Appropriations subcommittee, which oversaw federal spending. The badass Latina also pushed the Food and Drug Administration to include folic acid in corn masa flour, which is used to make tortilla dough and tamales. A lack of folic acid is a contributor to neural tube defects in children, according to NBC News.

On top of that, Roybal-Allard received the 2022 Champion for Children Award from Shine Global.

May she inspire other Latinas to follow suit!

Day of the Dead Tourism is booming

Day of the Dead or Dia de Muertos has, somehow, become commercialized. Though it is great to celebrate other people’s cultures, it makes one wonder why this wasn’t the case just a few years ago. Now, as the holiday – which celebrates life at its core – gains traction, the tourism industry to Mexico during this special holiday is booming. In fact, it is estimated that the celebration of the Day of the Dead, from October 28 to November 2, 2022, will generate about $1.8 billion. Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marques, said that the arrival of 2.1 million tourists to hotels in Mexico is expected through November 2. Let’s hope this type of tourism can help small businesses for the United States’ neighbor.
