Happy Monday, dear readers.

We start the week with an eye on Monkeypox’s declaration as a worldwide emergency and the most important news to start the week.

From this summer’s worrisome heat wave to Bad Bunny’s gift to RBD fans, here’s the info you need to know this Monday.

WHO declares monkeypox a public health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The decision was announced Saturday morning after WHO convened its second emergency committee on the issue on Thursday.

“I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Saturday morning.

Tedros said while the committee was unable to reach a consensus, he decided after considering the five elements required to determine whether an outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.

More than 85 million Americans were on Sunday under excessive heat warnings

From the Pacific north-west to the southern Great Plains, and onto the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor, more than 85 million Americans were on Sunday under excessive heat warnings or heat advisories issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).

The agency warned of “extremely oppressive” conditions from Washington to Boston.

Even in Promised Land State Park, 1,800ft up in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, temperatures were forecast to soar above 90F. But with shade from the forests, cool lake water, and mountain breezes, it was more than tolerable, visitors said.

Mexican abortion provider opens clinic on US border

With the right to abortion no longer assured throughout the United States, a major provider of reproductive services in Mexico recently opened its first clinic in this city just across the border from San Diego.

Fundacion Marie Stopes Mexico’s Tijuana facility is just 10 km (6 mi) from the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

The foundation’s MSI Reproductive Services arm, whose motto is “Children by choice and not by chance,” is ready to accommodate women of all nationalities.

The Tijuana location is MSI’s ninth clinic and opened early this month thanks to October 2021 legislation that made Baja California the first – and so far, only – Mexican state on the US border to allow abortion for any reason up to the 12th week of pregnancy.

Massive wildfire in California forces thousands to evacuate

A wildfire raging for a third day Sunday in central California’s Mariposa County outside Yosemite National Park has burned more than 14,000 acres and forced thousands to evacuate from rural communities, officials said.

The fire, which remained 0% contained Sunday morning, began Friday in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada near the small community of Midpines, roughly a 9-mile drive northeast of the county seat, the town of Mariposa, state fire officials said.
