We start this Monday with enough coffee and energy to get you ready for the week.
From the impact of Hurricane Ida to Camila Cabello’s debut as Cinderella, there’s plenty to unpack. We also enjoyed seeing artists and personalities such as Megan Thee Stallion, Jessie Reyez, and chef José Andrés at BottleRock Napa Valley.
Without further ado, here is the most important news to start your week!
Hurricane Ida’s impact is expected to be much worse
Dozens of people have died in the northeastern part of the country in the wake of Hurricane Ida, and experts warn that the weather crisis is just beginning. Despite the National Hurricane Center warning of the potential for “significant and potentially deadly flash flooding,” the storm’s strength late Wednesday night took many by surprise. Dozens of people died throughout the area. In New York, numerous people drowned in basements.
Latinos may be Newsom’s only hope in California
In California, Latinos were disproportionately devastated by the pandemic, with high mortality and infection rates caused partly because many are essential workers who became ill on the job, according to the Los Angeles Times. Now, with the recall election less than two weeks away, many Latinos are too engrossed in day-to-day struggles to pay much attention to the Republican-led effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom, which gained momentum over pandemic-related issues.
This is a huge long shot, but the person who filmed this deliverista last night received $1,700+ from media outlets who wanted to license the footage.
They want to give all of it to the worker, but need finding him. Any tips? This was ~10:10pm near Roebling/11th st in BK. ⬇️ https://t.co/pzF1jVDaaz

AOC is back at it again on social media, this time to help a delivery driver
Bronx Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz, better known as AOC, has once again used her significant social media clout to help those affected by the flooding from Hurricane Ida. AOC has spent the last few days trying to find a delivery man filmed wading through floodwaters. The initial call was made by photographer Johnny Myller, who captured the scene in Brooklyn and wanted to locate the worker to donate the money he got for licensing the footage.
Camila Cabello is the first Latina Cinderella
Camila Cabello officially debuted as an actress in the new Cinderella movie that premiered last September 3 on Amazon Prime. In this coming-of-age version, the Cuban-American singer plays Ella, an ambitious young woman who hopes to one day become a successful businesswoman. Amazon Original’s modern musical offers a bold take on the century-old fairy tale that Disney turned into a popular animated musical film in 1950.
The Vibrancy of BottleRock Napa Valley
BELatina News grazed the grounds of BottleRock Napa Valley this past weekend and it was a great thing to witness. From Chef Jose Andres’ and Chef Aaron Sanchez to performances by Megan Thee Stallion to Miley Cyrus, it was quite the spectacle. Best of all, as stated on their site, BottleRock strives to become one of the most sustainable festivals by increasing compost, decreasing landfill waste, and eliminating single-use plastic.
