Ozuna cleaned house at this year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards, taking home 11 awards of his 23 nominations in 15 categories, including artist of the year. Both the win and the nomination count broke historical records for the show, while also surpassing records of the original Billboard Music Awards; Ozuna’s awards sweepstakes for 2019 outnumbered the total number of awards won over the years by artists like Eminem, Destiny’s Child, and Mary J. Blige.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise with Ozuna being honored as one of Time 100’s Most Influential People this year. Ozuna was nominated for that honor by fellow Puerto Rican artist Daddy Yankee, with whom he collaborated for his remix of “Baila, Baila” that premiered at the awards ceremony; the remix also featured J Balvin, who took home a pair of his own honors, and Anuel AA. “I could see he had the power to become a star,” wrote Daddy Yankee in Time 100, sharing with fans a glimpse of the fire that he saw in Ozuna before he became a global superpower in the music industry.

Ozuna earned his awards for hot Latin song of the year and streaming song of the year for the song “Te Boté,” written by artists Nio García and Casper Mágico. It’s worth mentioning that two other award hoarders, Nicky Jam and Bad Bunny — who took home a handful of awards each — as well as Darell, were featured in “Te Boté.” Nio García told NBC News, “[We] never imagined that it would become such an important hit.” The list of winners dominated by male artists, but Shakira took home multiple awards, and Cardi B co-won the award for crossover artist of the year.

This year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards Show also earned an achievement of its own, having an 11% increase in viewership this year compared to last year’s ceremony. The ratings were so high that it pulled up Telemundo to the number one spot in Spanish-language prime time on Friday evening, according to figures cited by Billboard. Nationally, so many people tuned into the awards show that it became the most-watched program of all in major metropolises across the country — Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and New York — among adults between the ages of 18 and 49, even compared to English-language programs that aired that evening. This is an especially notable ratings boom, considering the show aired during the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame, which has pulled in over a billion dollars in global ticket sales already.
