Brazilian-American Actress, Barbie Ferreira, Wanted More Out of Her Role in 'Euphoria'

On August 2022, “Euphoria” fans received the news that Barbie Ferreira was not returning to the HBO Max show. Many people were not happy.

A lot of fans felt like they were robbed of Ferreira’s character, Kat, and her development within the show. Not only that, many felt empowered by Kat because her role allowed her to showcase a different realm of body positivity.

For months, people speculated on the reason why Ferreira decided to exit the teen drama series. Around the same time, allegations that the “Euphoria” set was toxic started to circulate, though the producers snapped back by saying that was untrue.

However, fans finally got an explanation for her departure.

In a recent episode of the podcast, “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard,” Ferreira got candid about her time in “Euphoria,” her experience with showrunner Sam Levinson, and more.

During the episode, the Brazilian-American actress spoke about the “struggle” it was to find plot lines that made sense for Kat in the season. This played into her decision to leave the show. She admitted to the conflict she faced with Levinson’s direction as well.

“It was a struggle to find the continuation of her. So that was actually really hurtful watching it and seeing the fans get upset,” Ferreira told Shepard.

“I just felt like, maybe it’s like I overstayed my welcome a little bit?” she added. “So, for me, I actually felt good to be like, ‘Okay, I get to not worry about this and we both don’t get too worried about this,’ because it’s exhausting.”

It must’ve been intimidating to be as honest as she was in this interview, but she spoke her truth without any filters.

“I don’t think there was a place for her to go,” Ferreira mentioned while she recalled Kat’s character development.

As the interview progressed, she continued to reflect on what her role was turning into – or, rather, what it wasn’t becoming.

Ferreira wanted more out of her role

“I think there were places she could have gone. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show. I don’t know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties [Levinson and I] knew that I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend.”

The stereotypical “fat best friend” has been present on TV for ages, but the role should be more than about weight. Weight should not determine anyone’s personality – not on the big screen or in real life.

She doubled down on her feelings about her role and said that she didn’t want to play that. “And I think they didn’t want that either.”

It’s refreshing to see young actors and actresses advocating for themselves and their art. Ferreira has shown a lot of promise in the industry, so we can only hope we continue to see her talent in other projects.

She was recently featured in the movie “Nope.”
