Elvis Amoroso, a figure synonymous with Nicolás Maduro’s regime, has been instrumental as the president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE). His impact on Venezuelan politics spans decades, marked by his early involvement as a dedicated Chavista and co-founder of the Fifth Republic Movement alongside Hugo Chávez.

Amoroso is professionally trained as both a lawyer and an economist. On top of that, his close ties with influential figures, including First Lady Cilia Flores, have cemented his position within the regime.

The recent presidential election, which saw Maduro controversially secure 51 percent of the vote, has placed Amoroso at the center of one of the most debated electoral processes in recent Venezuelan history. Meanwhile, Venezuela opposition leader Maria Corina Machado declared that the opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won 70 percent of the vote in a presidential contest as reported by Reuters.

Critics argue that Amoroso’s oversight was the defining factor in perpetuating the dictatorship’s grip on power through alleged electoral fraud.

Who Is Elvis Amoroso?

According to Infobae, Amoroso’s political journey began in the 1990s, and he gained momentum when he entered the Venezuelan Congress in 1993. Re-elected in 1998 with robust support from Chavista forces, he served as a deputy until 2015. His bid to join the Supreme Court of Justice in 2015 was unsuccessful, but his influence remained undiminished.

In October 2018, he was appointed Comptroller General by the National Constituent Assembly, an entity promoted by the regime but deemed unconstitutional by opposition parties. In this role, he disqualified at least 15 opposition leaders, including María Corina Machado, in maneuvers criticized for bypassing constitutional mandates requiring firm judicial sentences.

Amoroso’s tenure has not been without international scrutiny. In November 2017, the United States sanctioned him for his role in electoral fraud and media censorship. Panama also labeled him a “high-risk” individual for money laundering. Despite these sanctions, Amoroso has maintained his influential position within the Chavista regime.

Interestingly, in May of this year, the European Union temporarily lifted its sanctions against Amoroso, aiming to “strengthen” the ongoing presidential election process. This further solidifies the concerns over the legitimacy of elections under Amoroso’s supervision.

Elvis Amoroso has made quite a name for himself. From his fervent support of Chávez’s vision to his controversial actions within the Maduro regime, his legacy is deeply intertwined with the country’s political evolution. Today, Amoroso remains pivotal in shaping Venezuela’s trajectory – and few people are happy.
