There’s always something special about wearing new shoes. Quoting the iconic Dominique Jackson: “Get the shoes, baby, get the shoes.”

We might not know what it is, but they’re never enough, and now that summer is coming, our shoe wardrobe is probably looking empty and screaming for an update.

Well, we got you! Here are four Latina designers shaking up the world of shoe fashion, offering exciting and daring designs and supporting the Latino community.

Flor de María Rivera

Kylie Jenner, Normani, Thalia, Bebe Rexha, and Carrie Underwood are some of the celebrities who have worn Flor de Maria Rivera’s designs.

The Peruvian-American arrived in the United States at 14, attended the University of San Diego, and soon began a career as a sports anchor, producer, and writer for Telemundo, Univision, and more. In 2010 she started a bilingual fashion blog, “Flor de Maria Fashion,” then moved to New York in hopes of making contacts within the fashion world.

One of her posts about shoes on her blog started to attract attention, and some TV stations contacted Rivera to talk about shoes. Then, she got the brilliant idea to venture into the business world through shoes.

Rivera traveled to Italy and learned how to make shoes with the best at the prestigious Arsutoria school. But what are Flor de Maria’s designs based on? Well, she is always inspired by her roots, the Nazca Lines, the color of the Andes, and pre-Columbian objects such as the Tumi.

The elegance of her designs has attracted A-list celebrities and has made her one of the most influential Latina designers in the United States, and this is just the beginning.

MCLC

This Guatemalan designer Jacqueline Velasquez makes us enter a new and fun world with her designs. Her brand, MCLC, was born 18 years ago when Velasquez was in college studying biological sciences. She soon realized that her true passion was art and fashion.

Velasquez enrolled in art school to later work as a production and operations assistant. In 2018, she launched MCLC, a brand aimed at creating awareness in a world of fast fashion. MCLC’s mission is to work with eco-friendly materials and give back to the community for its support.  A portion of sales goes to non-profit organizations.

And MCLC goes for the exciting. Its latest collection implements 3-D elements, the yin and yang, smiley face, and flowers — a must for the coming season.

ALEPEL

Founded in 2014 by Adriana Epelboim-Levy, ALEPEL takes the art of shoes to another level. Epelboim-Levy studied architecture and, like many of us, has a passion for shoes, so she decided to follow that passion and enrolled in the shoe design program at Arsutoria School in Milan.

Since its launching, ALEPEL’s primary focus was that each piece must be unique, delicately created, and accompanied by a stunning collection of hand-painted artwork. The luxurious shoes are made in Brazil with high-quality materials and are hand-painted by local artists in the Miami area.

Epelboim-Levy’s Venezuelan roots are reflected in her designs. Comfortable and with a dynamic spirit, ALEPEL shoes hope to be wearable art.

Anabella shop

With a mission to empower women through footwear, Rossy G. Sánchez created Annabella almost six years ago. After leaving Venezuela and with a career as an industrial engineer with more than 20 years of experience in the industry, Sánchez decided to start Annabella.

Artisans make Annabella’s designs in Alicante, Spain, with the closest attention and care. The brand does not shy away from venturing into a variety of options. You can find sandals, pums, and boots being the Paris Boots the best sellers of the brand. The brand does not limit itself to spectacular designs; it also offers an experience when opening the box, from it emanating a perfume that manages to catch the customer.
