Guillermo Del Toro has a new series on Netflix that is sure to be thrilling for all fans of horror.

“Cabinet of Curiosities” is an anthology series with a collection of episodes directed by different people inspired by a tale of short stories. It was created by the Mexican filmmaker, Guillermo Del Toro. The entire season will be released this week on Netflix.

Before we get into reviewing the first episode, it’s important to acknowledge the impeccable past of Guillermo Del Toro. Even though he has a unique style, there’s a film out there that he has made for everyone. Del Toro is a talented writer and director, and has gained a lot of popularity amongst the filmmakers’ community with his 2006 film “Pan’s Labyrinth.” He’s also well-known for making cult-classic comic book films such as “Hellboy” and “Blade 2”.

The esteemed filmmaker had a 5 year (2008-2013) period in which he didn’t direct anything at all. He served as a writer and a partner to Peter Jackson for “The Hobbit” trilogy starring Martin Freeman. When Del Toro came back to directing in 2013 with “Pacific Rim,” it was clear that the industry needed his talent and his vision in the theaters.

Del Toro was known as “your favorite filmmaker’s favorite filmmaker” until he got the true international recognition he deserved by winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards with 2017‘s “The Shape of Water.”

Now, Guillermo Del Toro is like the Alfred Hitchcock of his craft – a truly respected legend who makes films for himself with the ability to stay true to his nature. It is what makes him beloved by fans and critics alike.

A brief vibe on the first episode of ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’

Each episode of Guillermo Del Toro‘s “Cabinet of Curiosities” begins with an introduction from the legendary filmmaker. Del Toro gives some foreshadowing of the events to come and the story – and some interesting metaphors to intrigue the audience. Anyone who has seen the classic Hitchcock films will instantly pick up that Del Toro is introducing each story similarly to Hitchcock’s “Psycho” theatrical trailer.

None of the episodes in the show are directed by Guillermo Del Toro, which is unfortunate. However, the directors he assembled are sure to deliver if he gave them the green light.

The first episode stars Tim Blake Nelson of “O Brother Where Art Thou?” and “Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” Nelson is a terrific actor who has worked for just about every legendary director. His most colorful performances come from his roles working with the Cohen Brothers.

Nelson plays Nick Appleton, a cynical army veteran who is fed up with life. When he buys an abandoned storage unit, the items inside lead to supernatural consequences (packed with fundamental lessons) in otherwise dark and twisted plot lines. It was a bit of a slow burn, but Tim Blake Nelson is always a joy to watch.

The series is set to have other talented performers like Andrew Lincoln of “The Walking Dead” performing in an episode.
