The United States Mint has officially put into circulation a new 25-cent coin honoring the legendary Cuban singer Celia Cruz, a trailblazer whose influence on Latin music and culture remains unmatched. This release marks a historic moment, as Cruz becomes the first Afro-Latina to be featured on U.S. currency, highlighting her enduring legacy.

Part of the ongoing “American Women Quarters” series, which began in 2022 and will continue through 2025, this coin celebrates women who have made significant contributions to American society. The series, which releases five new coins each year, will also honor Reverend Pauli Murray, Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink, surgeon Mary Edwards Walker, and educator Zitkala Sa in 2024.

Celia Cruz Is a Timeless Icon

Celia Cruz, widely known as “La Reina de la Salsa” or “The Queen of Salsa,” is one of the most important Afro-Latina icons within our community. This is why it’s so great to see her shine after her death.

The coin’s reverse side features Cruz in one of her signature outfits, with her radiant smile and the famous inscription “¡Azúcar!”— a phrase that became synonymous with her electrifying performances.

The decision to include Cruz in this prestigious series showcases her impact on both the Latin music scene and the culture in the United States at large. The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of George Washington, originally designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Cruz, who sought exile in the United States in 1961 and never returned to Cuba, passed away on July 16, 2003, in New Jersey. Her legacy, however, lives on, and this coin serves as a lasting tribute to her contributions and the joy she brought to countless lives. Now in circulation, this coin gives everyone the opportunity to honor Cruz’s life even more.
