BELaVoz is back to bring us the voices our community craves.
This year seems to be keeping us on a never-ending roller coaster ride. At this point, most of us are despeinados, suspended in the air with our feet dangling, while urging our hearts to get back in its proper space. Why did anyone let us in on this ride? Oh, that’s right. We didn’t have a choice. Luckily, there are a few people around the world providing us with hope and Richard Blanco is one of them.
Richard Blanco was the inaugural poet at the swearing-in ceremony for President Obama in 2013. This was a historic moment as he was the first immigrant, openly gay person of the Latinx community, and youngest person, to be a U.S. inaugural poet. Aside from being an exceptional poet, he is also a public speaker, educator, and memoirist.
In this BELaVoz episode, Blanco reads us his poem, “Imaginary Exile,” giving us a different perspective on the current situation. Listen to it and allow yourselves to feel the power of his poem. It’s worth it.
