10 Funky, Last-Minute Father’s Day Gifts That Aren’t Socks, Ties, or Mugs

Ah, Father’s Day gifting. Mother’s Day commerce is notoriously driven by guerrilla marketing, the kind that hawks goods and services, from the saccharine to the prohibitively priced, intended to deliver a day of relaxation, recognition, and pampering. But Father’s Day gifting is harder to figure out. Whether you’re honoring your father or the father of your children, it’s good to have options beyond the proverbial, old-timey tie.

If you’re shopping for a dad like mine, he is an absolute pragmatist and feels there is nothing at all that he needs. If he is like my husband, he is an aesthete with a great style, which I sometimes cannot anticipate. The trick with both extremes is to find the thing he didn’t even know he needed/existed, one that appeals to his sense of style but also purpose. No one will be missing that coffee mug once they unbox one of these beauties:

10 A Solid Timepiece

Without breaking the bank, the Seiko SKX007 is a timeless piece suitable for adventures. This automatic (self-winding) beauty will hold up to scuba diving, not to mention the shower at the gym. Versatile, durable, stylish, and under $150: an heirloom in the making.

9 A Proper Knife

Whittler or not, everyone can use a good, sharp pocket knife. Before you order one of those multi-tool, red-cased jimmies, consider a knife so good-looking he’ll want to cut a steak with it, so functional he could. With it’s design unchanged since 1890, a handsome, wooden-handled Opinel pocket knife starts around $20.

8 Fashion Sneakers

The Adidas Gazelle sneakers are classically styled, versatile, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors, depending on the season.

7 A Cool Backpack

Styled with Scandinavian minimalism and functionality, a full-sized Fjallraven Kanken backpack features padded straps and a spacious main compartment, suitable for day-tripping and traveling alike.

6 An Elegant Notebook

Where would he jot down the thoughts that come up during the commute but a handy and portable beauty like a simple Moleskine? Available in a spectrum of sizes and looks, feel free to inspire deep thoughts from dad.

5 Cool Guy Sunglasses

Piggyback on the proximity of his day to the summer season and pick up a set of RayBan aviators for your Top Gun.

4 Handkerchiefs

Not everything with a retro flair translates well to our modern lifestyles, but there are few things that have made me want to instantaneously renew my vows with my husband and have 10 more kids with him than the times he solved a mucus/schmutz/barf situation with a handkerchief. Have plain ones monogrammed for an extra personal touch.

3 A Wallet

If dad has been struggling with an unwieldy wallet situation (or having low back pain from sitting on a fat billfold), a slim leather wallet by Bellroy makes for a great upgrade.

2 A Really Good Pen

Dad deserves a luxuriously-inked writing device with a fine feel. But not all dads want a bank-breaker for everyday use. A Parker Jotter pen gives that delicious glide of a Mont Blanc, but won’t bankrupt him if he loses it.

1 A Fitbit

My husband and I gave one another these fitness trackers for Mother’s and Father’s Day this year. Beyond counting steps, they track sleep patterns and heart rate, inspiring us both to optimize our health habits so we can celebrate many more Father’s Days together.
