Hello fellow procrastinator! Yes, you. I’m talking to you. I don’t know how we got here, but here we are again.

Every year I tell myself that I’ll get my holiday shopping in time, and every year I find myself rummaging through the unwanted items left behind from early holiday shoppers. However, believe it or not, I also make these items work.

So, I want you to share my secrets to help you become the ultimate gift-giver without anyone realizing that your anxiety level maxed out the day (or hours before) of the gift exchange because you left everything for the last minute.

Don’t worry, this doesn’t make us bad people — we just decide not to get lost in the hype of an ultra-consumerist world, right? Is that it?

Anyway, check out my go-to list for last-minute gifts below. Key tip: Grab a bunch of overlooked items and throw them into a basket (or a cute box) to create the ultimate gift set. Keep reading to find out how to do this the right way.

Self-care Gift Set

This one is probably one of the easiest to create. All you need is to find a candle or two, face masks, lotion, and other items that you feel help with your loved one’s self-care routine. Some may throw in CBD-infused tea, incense, a mini humidifier, loofahs, bubble bath soap, and bath bombs. Be sure to fill it up as much as possible.

Period Gift Set

Let’s not pretend this is not one of the best gifts you can get someone who menstruates. I mean, I’d love for someone to give this to me — period products can be so expensive, especially since the period tax still exists (ugh!). So, for this gift set, you want to fill it up with as many products as possible. Pack it with pads, tampons, a Diva cup (if that’s something you know they’d be into), period panties, feminine wash and/or wipes, medicine for cramps, chocolate, bags of chips, a heating pad, and anything else that may benefit them during their special time of the month. It’s a different type of gift, but one that will definitely be used.

Food Gift Set

This is perhaps my favorite to create. Nothing says you know the person like showing up with a gift set filled with their favorite foods. For example, my father-in-law loves guava-flavored foods, so I managed to create a basket filled with food items from various Latin American countries whose key ingredient was guava. This came in packaged pastries, cookies, candies, and even candy sticks.

Fresh Flowers

You can never go wrong with a bouquet of fresh flowers. Before getting to their place to exchange gifts, stop by your local florist (preferably a Latinx-owned flower shop) and get them flowers to complement your already amazing gift.

Hand-written cards

I never buy cards that already have a message inside because I find them so impersonal. Instead, I always go for blank cards where I can write a few sentences that show how much I care for this person. Whether it’s a friend, a family, or a work colleague, it’s always a nice gesture. If you are at a loss for words or feel like you can’t write anything, go online and search for a short poem or quote. Then, copy the poem or quote into the card. Please make sure that whatever you are writing is appropriate for the person on the receiving end. Don’t give your co-worker a love poem — that’d be awkward AF.

Now, the next part is important. Write a couple of sentences before it that states that though you didn’t know how to express yourself properly, you wanted to make sure that your message got across the right way.  It’s a little cheesy, but aren’t the holidays cheesy overall? Besides, this gesture will (hopefully) be appreciated.

Remember, presentation is also very important. Wrap it up with recyclable, clear plastic wrapping and tie it with a large bow. You can also add shredded tissue paper or large confetti pieces to line the basket. And voila! No one will know that you did all of this at the last minute, and even if they did, they’d be so happy with their gift.
