With summer always comes cool, hydrating, and delicious foods. Nothing better than a good ice cream on a hot day, isn’t it true? And if that ice cream has a Latin flavor, so much the better!

Paola Vélez, one of the country’s top Latin chefs, has partnered with Häagen-Dazs to launch a limited summer edition of peanut butter and chocolate ice cream.

The limited-edition Vélez is part of the City Sweets collection, inspired by the iconic treats found in street vendors in major cities across the country. All five flavors are now on sale nationwide.

As explained by QSR Magazine, Paola Vélez and Häagen-Dazs’ partnership is part of an effort to elevate the next generation of talented creatives through the #ThatsDazs campaign. In Häagen-Dazs stores exclusively, Vélez and Häagen-Dazs stores are featuring a new limited edition PB&J Sundae, available from June 15 through the end of August.

“Since the beginning of our #ThatsDazs campaign in 2021, Paola has been such a positive and engaging voice for our new brand identity and community,” says Elizabell Marquez, CMO at Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream. “Once we recognized Paola’s bright spirit and passion for baking with Häagen-Dazs was synonymous with our support for rising culinary talent, we knew there was a larger collaboration to dream up.”

For those who haven’t yet heard of her, Paola Vélez is an award-winning young Latina baker and activist who has worked with restaurants such as Milk Bar and Maydan. Vélez co-founded Bakers Against Racism and the pop-up donut store Doña Dona in 2020.

The influence of her grandmother’s cooking in the Dominican Republic, plus her training at Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando, Florida, has transformed Paola Vélez’s pastries into a trademark.

Today, Vélez is considered one of the best new chefs by publications such as Food and Wine, and her passion for social justice accompanies her everywhere she goes.

As part of Paola’s partnership with Häagen-Dazs stores, an amount equal to 10 percent of sales from PB&J Sundae proceeds during the promotional period that runs from now through August 31 will be donated to Dreaming Out Loud, a nonprofit organization selected by Vélez that supports underrepresented food entrepreneurs. Dreaming Out Loud rebuilds urban and community food systems through social enterprise.

“I am the daughter of an immigrant from the Bronx. Once I found out that the Founders of Häagen Dazs were also immigrants that settled in the Bronx, the chemistry was electric,” said Vélez. “I’m proud to be able to create a sundae for Häagen Dazs and share the proceeds of this delicious creation with Dreaming Out Loud. I hope to not only inspire the culinary community but support the next generation of tastemakers, dreamers and way-makers right here in our Nation’s capital.”
