Sofía Vergara has achieved a historic milestone in television by becoming the first Latina to be nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie at the Emmy Awards. This groundbreaking nomination comes for her riveting performance in the Netflix miniseries “Griselda,” which became one of the most-watched shows early in 2024.

At 52 years young, Vergara has long been celebrated for her comedic roles, most notably as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the beloved sitcom “Modern Family” and as a voice actor in “Despicable Me 4.” However, her role as the feared Black Widow in “Griselda” marks a significant departure from her usual genre. Not only did Vergara deliver a powerful performance, but she also took on the role of executive producer for the miniseries, marking her first major foray into dramatic television.

What Sofía Vergara Says About Her Historic Emmy Nomination for ‘Griselda’

On social media, Vergara shared a heartfelt message expressing her gratitude for the overwhelming support she received throughout the project’s journey. She posted a photo reel capturing behind-the-scenes moments from the filming of “Griselda,” revealing that it took her 15 years to bring this role to life.

Vergara extended her thanks to director Andrés Baiz, co-stars Alberto Guerra and Eric Newman, co-executive producer Luis Balaguer, and the entire Netflix team for their support and collaboration. Her post highlighted the dedication and passion that went into the series.

In addition to her Emmy nomination, Vergara continues to be a prominent television personality as a judge on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

Vergara faces stiff competition in the Best Lead Actress category, contending with some of the most acclaimed names in the industry. Jodie Foster is nominated for her compelling role in HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” while Brie Larson, known for her portrayal of Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is recognized for her performance in Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry.” Juno Temple is nominated for her role in FX’s “Fargo,” the television adaptation of the Coen brothers’ iconic film, and Naomi Watts is in the running for her portrayal in “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.”

The 76th Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 15 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where the winners will be announced and celebrated for their contributions to television.
