If you love to read, I’m sure there are some Latine authors on your bookshelf that made 2022 a better year.

As a book lover, I feel books help mold our perspective on life. They are, in one way or another, the perfect teachers because they also help us understand new things about ourselves. From devouring a novel, a memoir, or any good self-help publication, books are pivotal to our personal growth.

Unsurprisingly, this year many different books from a myriad of subjects were gifted to the world by talented Latine authors. So, here at BELatina, we compiled a list of some books published in 2022 that could also make it to your 2023 book list in case you haven’t had the chance to read them.

Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez

In her first book, Gonzalez tackles topics like racism and elitism based on her own personal experience. Olga Dies Dreaming tells the story of wedding planner Olga, who is also in the search of her fairytale ending. This book explores the raw reality of what we all know as the American Dream.

The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

Another debut novel, The Hacienda tells a love story developing during the time of the Mexican War of Independence. Contrary to the typical romance, this story has a supernatural suspense twist as the protagonist, Beatriz, is invaded by visions and voices during her sleep.

The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes

Reyes’s debut book is a National Best Seller, a National Book Award Finalist, and a William C. Morris YA Debut Award Finalist. The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School tells the story of a queer Mexican American woman attending a Catholic school while experiencing love and learning about herself and her feelings.

How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water: A Novel by Angie Cruz

In this new book, Cruz introduces us to Cara, a woman who loses her job during the Great Recession and begins to tell her story while she confronts her secrets and regrets. How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water: A Novel is a New York Times Notable Book and was also selected as a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice.

Violeta by Isabel Allende

Everything Allende does is a literary masterpiece, and Violeta is no exception. In this book, the author tells the story of Violeta, the first girl born in 1920 in a family with five sons. Ever since she was born, Violeta experiences a series of events that mark her life, such as the Great War ripples and the Spanish flu.

Happy reading! We hope you enjoy these Latine books in the New Year!
