5 Cast Members Representing the Latine Community in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ belatina, latine

After the release and success of Marvel’s first Black Panther film in 2018 – and the cultural significance it established by having a Black cast in an industry where historically excluded communities are usually underrepresented – there was no doubt that a second movie was going to be highly anticipated.

Fast forward to 2022, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit the theaters on November 10, and —as expected— lack of representation was not the hot topic. This time, Latine actors joined the superhero sequel, broadening the panorama and impacting all those with Hispanic backgrounds who have never felt identified with comic book characters.

These are the cast members who make part of those paving the way for Latine representation in Hollywood, especially in películas de superhéroes.

Tenoch Huerta

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Huerta plays the role of Namor, an indigenous king of the Mayan-inspired civilization known as Talokan.

Born in Ecatepec de Morelos, Mexico, the actor’s first movie appearance was back in 2006 when portraying a limpiavidrios in the Mexican film Así del precipicio. After that, he started paving his way in the acting world and has been in movies and series like El infierno, Colosio: El asesinato, Los 33, Capadocia, Narcos: México, and The Forever Purge.

Huerta is also a member and supporter of Poder Prieto, an initiative fighting against racism.

Mabel Cadena

Cadena gives life to Namora, Namor’s cousin in the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The actress was born in Atizapan, Mexico, but was raised in a city in Veracruz. Her jump to the big screen took place in 2012 with a role in the HBO series Capadocia. The Mexican has also appeared in movies like El baile de los 41 and La diosa del asfalto.

Namora is her first role in Hollywood.

Lupita Nyong’o

Although her parents are from Kenya, Nyong’o was born in Mexico City, Mexico, where her dad worked as a college professor.

The actress received an Academy Award in 2014 for best supporting actress for the film 12 Years of Slave. Her professional career led her to portray Nakia in Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Nyong’o has also appeared in movies like East River, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Us, and The 355, among others.

She has proven plenty of times that she talks — and lip-syncs — perfect Spanish.

Alex Livinalli

Livinalli joined the Marvel sequel as Attuma, who’s Namor’s enemy.

The actor was born in Caracas, Venezuela, but moved to Miami, Florida, with his parents when he was a child.

Livinalli has been acting since 2008. Most of his work is showcased in different television series such as The Vampire Diaries, Nashville, Chicago P.D., Queen of the South, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, 100 días para enamorarnos, and Ozark.

Maria Mercedes Coroy

The 28-year-old Latina portrays Princess Fen, Namor’s mother, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The actress was born in Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala, and began her professional acting career in 2015 with the movie Ixcanul. Coroy has appeared in other films such as Bel Canto and La Llorona. She also played the role of La Malinche in the 2018’s TV series Malinche

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is, undoubtedly, an example of how to include proper representation in a film.
