The AFI (American Film Institute) Fest is back! This year, the 36th annual edition of the film festival will take place from November 2-6 at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Here’s what’s in store for us next week.

What Latine talent is featured this year?

The full program features 125 titles, of which 53 percent are directed by women, 32 percent are directed by BIPOC filmmakers, and 11 percent are directed by LGBTQIA+ filmmakers, per their official website. It also includes 31 countries, which features six International Feature Oscar submissions: Spain’s “Alcarràs,”, Mexico’s “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” Belgium’s “Close,” Poland’s “Eo,” Pakistan’s “Joyland,” and France’s “Saint Omer.”

Besides the aforementioned films, the AFI Fest will also feature long-awaited Latine films such as Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” and the world premiere of “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me.” It will also present Argentina’s “Trenque Lauquen,” and Brazil’s “Dry Ground Burning (Mato Seco Em Chamas).

Other Latine showcases include the short films: Argentina’s “The Spiral,” and Peru’s “Bedwetter (Pilona),” among others. You can find the full list of all the global cinema selections on the film festival’s official website.

What we’re looking forward to

We’re excited to embrace our Latine representatives such as Del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” which has already started to make a buzz online. In fact, it’s already garnered many positive reviews. For example, The Daily Beast said: “As both a stop-motion marvel and an exciting, dark story, Pinocchio is a rousing success.” Bravo! We couldn’t imagine any less from the great Mexican filmmaker.

AFI Fest is described as: “a world-class event, showcasing the best films from across the globe to captivated audiences in Los Angeles. With a diverse and innovative slate of programming, the film festival presents a robust lineup of fiction and nonfiction features and shorts presented in established AFI FEST sections, along with panels and conversations featuring both master filmmakers and new cinematic voices.”
