Pedro Pascal is doubling down on his support for the LGBTQIA community. He recently shared three images showing the LGBTIA flag on Instagram with the caption: “The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind. #LGBTQIA.”

This shouldn’t be a shock to anyone as the Chilean-American actor has been an avid supporter of the LGBTQIA community for years.

However, the timing of his post is what’s noteworthy.

Why Pedro Pascal’s Instagram post matters now more than ever

Though there has been a lot of progress in the LGBTQIA community within the last 20 years, there continues to be a lot of discrimination toward the community.

For starters, violence against trans and non-binary people is on the rise. This trend is a constant, which is reported by the Human Rights Campaign yearly. According to the HRC, on average, 44 transgender and gender-nonconforming people are killed every year. These tragic events are even higher for those who are part of historically excluded communities, such as the Black and Latine communities.

There are also laws being passed that allow for the erasure of LGBTQIA existence. Let’s take the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida, for instance. The bill, formally filed as the “Parental Rights in Education”, had plenty of fine print – and it targeted the LGBTQIA+ community.

A portion of the bill reads, “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

As a direct result of this bill being passed, several books on identity have been banned in Florida and inclusive language is being restricted too. Aside from that, not too long ago, same-sex marriage came dangerously close to being overturned.

These are only a handful of the many LGBTQIA issues the United States is currently facing – there’s more discrimination and hate to last centuries.

Pascal’s support for the LGBTQIA community is personal as his sister is a trans woman. On February 9th, 2021 he shared a photo of her on the cover Ya with a caption that read, “Mi hermana, mi corazón, nuestra Lux,” which translates to, “my sister, my heart, our Lux.”

The Mandalorian actor loves and supports loudly.

What people are saying

His latest photo is a testament to this and people are loving it.

Yet, some people are using his latest LGBTQIA flag post to speculate on the Chilean actor’s sexuality. But that’s neither here nor there. It is never okay to question anyone’s sexuality and no one, including Pedro Pascal, owes anyone an explanation of how they identify.

For now, let’s focus on how amazing it is to have some great people stand with the LGBTQIA community.
