From Music to Film: These Latinos Are Being Recognized During Hispanic Heritage Month

From Music to Film: These Latinos Are Being Recognized During Hispanic Heritage Month. belatina latine

Every year, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) celebrates the positive impact of outstanding Latinxs through an award ceremony, which also honors their trajectory.

The 35th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards takes place on September 30 and will recognize Latino/xs in the music, entrepreneurship, military, and film industries, among others.

According to HHF, this award program was created by the White House to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The program is also “among the highest honors by Latinos for Latinos”.

This 2022, HHF will be granting six different awards.

This year’s Hispanic Heritage Awards honorees

Olga Custodio

Custodio is the first Latina military pilot fighter qualified and will be receiving the 2022 STEM Award (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Award). With over 40 years in aviation, Custodio was also the first Latina commercial pilot to reach the Captain rank with American Airlines.

Daddy Yankee

The famous “King of Reggaeton” will receive the 2022 Legend Award. The singer has certainly been an agent of change that influenced and inspired generations of reggaeton and urban artists. Daddy Yankee is behind hits like “Gasolina,” “Despacito,” and “Con Calma.” In 2022, the Puerto Rican announced his final album Legendaddy.

Los Lobos

The American rock band, Los Lobos, will be receiving the 2022 Arts Award. The band’s journey began in the ’70s in East Los Angeles. Band members David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, and Conrad Lozano topped U.S. and UK charts with their rendition of Richie Valens’ “La Bamba.”

Victoria Alonso

This Latina working as an executive producer for Marvel Studios will receive the 2022 Vision Award. The Argentinian native moved to the U.S. when she was 19 and worked her way up to become part of the film industry where she began as a PA. 

Alejandro Velez & Nikhil Arora

These two Latinos are the immigrant co-founders of Back to the Roots — a farming company that supports sustainability through innovation — will be receiving the 2022 Entrepreneurship Award. Nikhil and Alejandro are basically making gardening easy for everyone, anywhere. 

Ariana DeBose

The Academy Award-Winning Actress will receive the 2022 Inspira Award. DeBose is best known for her acting in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. Her interpretation of Anita got her an Oscar, BAFTA, SAG, and Critics Choice Awards. 

The 35th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards will air on September 30, 2022, on PBS stations, www.pbs.org, and the PBS Video app. 

Other Latino/xs that have been recognized during this ceremony in past years include Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Los Tigres Del Norte, Juanes, Diego Luna, Carlos Santana, Bad Bunny, Ivy Queen, and Selena Gomez, among others.
