Liza Colón-Zayas made history as the first Latina to win the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, a milestone long overdue. Despite Sofia Vergara’s multiple nominations for Modern Family, no Latina had ever claimed the title — until now.

Colón-Zayas, one of the standout stars of the hit series The Bear, delivered an impassioned and heartfelt speech during the awards ceremony. The New York-born actress, of Puerto Rican descent, expressed deep gratitude for the honor, dedicating it to her family, including her husband David Zayas, who also stars in the series.

What Liza Colón-Zayas Had to Say About Her Emmy Win

With no prepared speech — she admitted she hadn’t expected to win — Colón-Zayas stood in awe, reflecting on the company of legends she found herself among. “How could I have imagined standing in the presence of Meryl Streep, Carol Burnett, Janelle, and Sheryl Lee Ralph?” she said. “I love them all, and I revere them with all my heart.”

The moment wasn’t just personal, though. Colón-Zayas took the opportunity to inspire her fellow Latinas, urging them to keep believing and to vote for their rights. Her message, delivered with palpable emotion, allowed everyone to understand the significance of her groundbreaking win.

‘The Bear’ Now Shines Brighter

The Bear, which has been a breakout hit, garnered an impressive 23 nominations this year, with Colón-Zayas’ portrayal of Tina Marrero earning her the Emmy nod. The character of Tina, a kitchen stalwart under the leadership of Chef Carmy (played by Jeremy Allen White), has been a fan favorite, and her backstory is deeply explored in the show’s third season.

With The Bear continuing to gain momentum, Colón-Zayas’ triumph represents her individual success. It also represents her victory for representation in the entertainment industry. The series, available on Disney+, remains a critical and fan favorite, as Colón-Zayas’ portrayal further cements her place in television history.
