Calling aspiring Latino filmmakers! The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) is back and ready to hear your stories. Yes, LALIFF’s call for their third LALIFF Inclusion Fellowship is officially open!

What is this fellowship aiming for?

The fellowship focuses on underrepresented filmmakers within the Latino community – with support from Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity. This specifically calls for ten visionary directors: five self-identifying as Indigenous Latino and five Afro/Black Latino.

The official website notes the following: “For the purpose of this program, Indigenous Latino will be defined as any filmmaker living in the United States who self-identifies as Indigenous to any Latin American territory or as Chicano/Xicanx or Mexican Native American. Afro/Black Latino will be defined as any filmmaker living in the United States who self-identifies as Afro/Black Latino.”

Each winner will receive a total of $30,000 as support for their short film’s production. Not only that, but the fellowship also includes access to educational opportunities and mentorship from industry professionals, per their official website. The mentorship covers topics from production to distribution, according to the press release.

On top of all that, each short film will also be showcased at LALIFF 2023 edition.

“Last year, LALIFF and Netflix expanded the Inclusion fellowship by adding the Indigenous Latino cohort to the existing Afro/Black Latino cohort with the goal of uplifting Latino voices and moving representation forward,” Academy Award®-nominated actor, founder of the Latino Film Institute (LFI) and co-founder of LALIFF, Edward James Olmos said in a press release.

“As we begin our third year, we are proud to announce the fellows will be receiving larger grants in order to bring their stories to life. It is fantastic to see Netflix realize the need to invest more in the Latino community and our stories.”

For those interested in applying for the LALIFF Inclusion Fellowship: the call for submissions is open from now to September 16, 2022, at 11:59 pm PST.

Good luck, besties! We can’t wait to see your beautiful stories on screen!
