The border city of El Paso, Texas, is currently facing an immigration crisis that has left hundreds of migrants living on the streets as local shelters have reached their capacity.

On Saturday, December 17, El Paso Mayor Oscar Lesser issued a disaster declaration related to the influx of migrants entering the country through this border area.

The Title 42 policy, which has kept thousands of migrants in Mexico, was supposed to end this Wednesday, December 21. However, the Supreme Court blocked the decision, and authorities will continue implementing it until further notice.

What is going on with the migrants?

During a press conference on Saturday, Leeser said he needed to declare a state of emergency based on concerns for the safety of asylum seekers and the community.

“I said from the beginning that I would call it when I felt that either our asylum seekers or our community were not safe, and I really believe that today our asylum seekers are not safe as we have hundreds and hundreds on the streets, and that’s not the way to treat people,” the mayor mentioned.

On Wednesday, December 21, the City of El Paso issued an official statement announcing the collaboration between the local government and the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) that would help with the humanitarian crisis. The educational entity identified two vacant schools that will serve as temporary sheltering facilities for migrants.

“All eyes are on El Paso, and for this reason, we must show the world the compassion our community is known for and illustrate the resilience and strength of our region,” said City Manager Tommy Gonzalez.

These are six El Paso organizations that are currently accepting donations to help with the immigration crisis this border community is facing.
