Sala glam is a thing, haven’t you heard? Well, at least it is for the Latinx community. And the time to walk down your tia’s imaginary runway in the living room is quickly approaching.

As you may already know, most Latinx families hold their holiday parties at someone’s house. The way it’s decided is beyond me, but someone usually lends their house (and in my family, it will never be me — I’d throw everyone out after two hours.) Si! Soy una antipática y que?

Once we all know where we are going to eat and drink until the wee hours of the morning, most of us start thinking about who will bring what, who will be in charge of the music, and if we are going to exchange gifts during the event. But then there’s the thought-process of the primas or cousins who make family holiday parties their personal Met Gala. Do you know a prima like that? If you don’t, you’re probably that prima, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Hell, I can be that prima too, from time to time.

Now, if you’ve always wanted to be that prima fabulosa, but aren’t sure how to make your debut as that role in the family, fret not! Let’s go through the magical process of blossoming into the self-proclaimed queen of the holiday party.

Take notes — this role isn’t for the faint of heart!

Outfit check

First and foremost, you have to pick out just the right outfit. I’m sorry to break it to you, but jeans and a t-shirt won’t cut it if you’re trying to show out and have all the tia’s talk about you by the end of the night. Your outfit needs to have drama dripping as you strut your thing from the love seat to the family’s couch. Be all the drama you want to be. After all, this is your night, your glam moment. Find an outfit that makes you feel like the baddest bitch in town. Your hair, face, and shoes need to be part of the ensemble, and it needs to be cohesive. Do your research — try Google, Pinterest, or discuss it with your friends.

Attitude level on 100

La prima fabulosa exudes confidence and grace. Walk in like you own that living room. But make sure that you don’t walk in empty-handed either. Being rude isn’t a fabulous-like trait. Walk with your head held high, and don’t forget to saludar a Reymundo y a todo el mundo. You might feel some type of way if you feel like you’re overdressed but ignore those thoughts. Remember that not everyone can uphold the role of la prima fabulosa, but every family does need one (or a few.) Si te toca a ti, te toca.

Dance moves

Anyone who gets on a dance floor and dances is by default fabulous. However, it is important to note that you don’t need to dance well — just getting into the dance floor or — sala floor — is enough. Even jumping up and down can account for dancing. What matters is showing your two-step without any pena and living the moment without caring who will chismosear later on.

Be the example

As we get older, we realize that it is up to us to have the younger primitos and primitas feel comfortable at these events. Let’s not forget that there might’ve been a time when we were younger and didn’t know how to feel at parties where we were set aside while the adults had all the fun. Instead, take it upon yourself to create a safe space for the younger generation as well. I remember that my favorite uncle (may he rest in peace) made the children, including myself, feel welcomed by always buying all of us ice cream from the ice cream truck that passed by what seemed a million times in one night. He was also the one that would bring us to the dance floor and teach us how to dance by letting us step on top of his shoes while guiding us with his steps. Those moments made me think that he was the coolest person in the room, and that’s ultimately the goal. It’s not necessary to be una sangrona — you can be the one to bring everyone together.

At this point, I think we can all agree that anyone can be that prima, primo, or primx. See, it’s all about how we carry ourselves.

Feel free to drink a few liquid courage shots (responsibly and not in excess) to get in that mood. Remember, we’ve survived pandemic 2.0, so we deserve to be as sensational as we want to be.
