From the literary tradition of Romulo Gallegos’ “Doña Barbara” to the iconic “Maria la del Barrio” in popular culture, Latin America has been the birthplace of the best dramatic storytelling.

After many efforts to capture the essence of Latin drama in the new digital formats, ABC seems to have hit the nail on the head with “Promised Land,” an epic drama that will premiere on January 24.

The series will star John Ortiz as Joe Sandoval, Cecilia Suarez as Lettie Sandoval, Augusto Aguilera as Mateo Flores, Christina Ochoa as Veronica Sandoval, Mariel Molino as Carmen Sandoval, Tonatiuh as Antonio Sandoval, Andres Velez as Carlos Rincon, Katya Martin as Juana Sanchez and Rolando Chusan as Billy Rincon and Bellamy Young as Margaret Honeycroft.

Originally titled “American Heritage,” the series is written and executive produced by Matt Lopez, with Michael Cuesta serving as executive director.

Most recently, and as reported by Deadline, ABC announced the additional cast for “Promised Land,” which includes Yul Vazquez (The Outsider), Julio Macias (Selena: The Series), Ariana Guerra (Helstrom), Kerri Medders (SEAL Team) Tom Amandes (A Million Little Pieces), Natalia del Riego (How To Get Away With Murder) and Miguel Angel Garcia (Deputy).

The series was ordered as a pilot under ABC’s new executive regime last year, and thus becomes ABC Signature’s second drama for the 2021-22 season. It joins the hip-hop drama “Queens,” also ordered last year.

The cast of “Promised Land” is all Latino, as is the crew, which also features people whose stories resemble that of the Sandoval family, Deadline reported.

“‘La familia’ is how the cast and crew of Promised Land refer to each other, and it’s how I think of Jonnie Davis, Tracy Underwood, and their amazing team — as my creative family,” said Lopez in a statement to Deadline. “The courage and integrity they have shown in supporting this show make it clear that ABC Signature is committed to telling compelling stories in fresh and exciting ways, and it’s where I want to continue to work and create for years to come.”
