BELatina’s Weekend Recap: Remembering Irene Cara, Jennifer Lopez Announces New Music, and More Belatina latine

Happy Monday, mi gente! How is everyone doing after Thanksgiving? Are your pants fitting a bit snug and is your social battery drained? Or is that just me?

This time of year is great because everything seems to have an extra touch of joy. Soccer fans have been particularly blessed considering they are getting to cheer for their favorite team during the holiday season. Talking about soccer. Did you all catch the Mexico vs Argentina game? Yeah, it was brutal.

Aside from holidays and weekend soccer, the Latine community made a few headlines.

From the unfortunate passing of the icon Irene Cara to Karol G making history again, there’s plenty to cover today.

Let’s get to it!

Latina Icon Irene Cara Died

Singer-actress Irene Cara, who was of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, died over the weekend. She was just 63 years young. Cara grew up in the Bronx, New York, and had amassed several accolades due to her talents. She is best known for starring in the 1980s movies, “Fame” and “Flashdance.”

May she rest in paradise.

Jennifer Lopez Announces New Music with ‘This Is Me…Now’

Twenty years after her Ben Affleck-inspired album, “This Is Me…Then” album dropped, Jennifer Lopez, best known as JLo, is releasing its follow-up album. Cheekily titled “This Is Me…Now,” we can only assume it will give her fans a peak at what has transpired since her first love chapter with Affleck and now. JLo “blacked out” her social media a few days ago – similar to what Beyonce had previously done – and confirmed the arrival of new music by recreating the “This Is Me…Then” album’s cover. Who’s ready for some “Jenny From the Block” sounds?

Karol G Makes Spotify History again

According to Twitter handle ChartsKarolG, La Bichota now holds the record for the most streams in a month for a woman Latin music artist – ever. This discovery comes after Karol G received over 436 million streams in the month of May on Spotify. Did you have Karol G on repeat this summer?

Rauw Alejandro Named ‘Man of the Year’

In GQ Mexico’s latest issue, they named Urban artist Rauw Alejandro as the man of 2022. Alejandro also appeared on the cover of the esteemed publication.

The cover features an excerpt from the interview he had with GQ:

“I am doing my music, my way and I’d like for the public to get to know ‘Saturno.’”

“Saturno” is his newest album.

The famed Macy’s parade took place on Thanksgiving Day, per usual. This time around, however, there were a few nods to the Latino community. To start off, Bad Bunny got his own float, which took the shape of his “Un Verano Sin Ti’s” album mascot.

Mexico’s Delfines marching band also made a huge appearance. And it was definitely a sight to behold!
