Reggaeton is coming to Netflix.

Yes, it’s true! On November 9, Netflix gave the green light to the new reggaeton comedy series “Neon” by the Mexican-American author, screenwriter, and journalist Shea Serrano. It was ordered for eight episodes.

The new series will feature the Puerto Rican-American actor Tyler Dean Flores, English-Indian-Caribbean actress Emma Ferreira,  Asian-American comedian/TV writer Jordan Mendoza, and American Courtney Taylor.

What we know about the reggaeton series

Variety reports that the storyline will follow three friends “who move from a small town in Florida to Miami with the hopes of making it big in the world of reggaeton.” As per Forbes, the series “chronicles not only their larger than life dreams, but the harsh comic realities of attempting to make it in the music industry.” As a music journalist, I can’t wait to resonate with the realities of the Urbano music industry.

The series counts on consultation by the empowering Latina storytellers Katelina ‘La Gata’ Eccleston who we’ve interviewed about Latinidad, among other things, and the L.A. Times reporter Suzy Exposito. Two chingonas taking a significant part in a Hollywood production? We’re thrilled about it!

“It’s been an immense privilege to document the rise of El Movimiento as a journalist — even when industry people told me the sound I grew up on wasn’t worth the hype nor the precious page space,” Exposito wrote online. “Congratulations to Shea for manifesting the deal, and to the stellar Neon writers, producers, and cast, and to my dear friend and CHAMPION @reggaetonconlagata, who will also consult on the show.”

Eccleston wrote: “From the bottom of my heart, ALWAYS, THANK YOU to everyone who *sees* me in this media space.” With these two on board, we look forward to actual facts and less overly-played stereotypes.

While we don’t have more information about the new show, it’s speculated to be released in 2023.

We can’t wait!
