The new teaser for Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’ has left the whole world craving for more in anticipation of the premiere this coming November.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, multiple Oscar-winning director for her film ‘Nomadland,’ ‘The Eternals’ is set to be a production that will change the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever.
The new teaser shows Salma Hayek at the center of the poster and in the skin of the group’s spiritual leader, Ayak. After Sasha Calle became the first Latina to play Supergirl in the DC Universe, Hayek’s casting broke every obstacle a Latina actress might have faced in the industry.
“It’s kind of hard to be an action hero if you’re Mexican. It’s really hard to be an action hero if you’re a Mexican and a woman. But to be an action hero, being Mexican, a woman, and my age, it felt like they were punking me,” Hayek told Variety.
But for paradigm-shattering female directors like Zhao, this is another fundamental shift to push for in Hollywood.
“Ageism in Hollywood is a very concerning issue that we must stand against as artists,” Zhao told Variety. “Aging is a beautiful part of life that should be celebrated. It’s really an honor for us to have Salma to lead the ‘Eternals’ family.”
Salma Hayek is joined by Lauren Ridloff, an actress of African-American and Mexican-American heritage who will play Makkari, the MCU’s first deaf superhero. And the film’s inclusive cast, which has won Zhao praise, will also feature Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Harish Patel, Barry Keoghan, Mia Dong-Seok, Richard Madden, and Kit Harington.
“I think a lot of people are going to feel seen, and that’s important, and that’s what matters,” Hayek concluded.
