Gerard Piqué has largely remained silent since his highly publicized split from Latina superstar Shakira two years ago. While their breakup dominated headlines and fueled endless speculation, the former Barcelona futbol player has chosen to focus on his business ventures rather than fan the flames of public intrigue. Nevertheless, in a rare interview with CNN en Español, Piqué shared candid thoughts about the media and the perceptions that have emerged since he cheated on one of the most loved women in the world.

Piqué spoke at length about his latest entrepreneurial pursuits, particularly his company’s innovation in the realms of sports, gaming, and technology. But as the conversation drew to a close, he addressed the scrutiny that has followed him in recent years, acknowledging that he is often portrayed unfavorably. “I’ve always been very calm,” Piqué explained in Spanish. “The truth or what really happens is often not shared. I can’t control that.”

While he admits that such media coverage has an effect on him, Piqué explained that he tries to stay grounded by focusing on the people who matter most in his life. “I’ve always believed that it’s important for me to surround myself with my family and my friends, and the people that really know you and know who you are and what you do,” he said. “That gives me a lot of peace.”

Piqué Found Peace?

Ultimately, Piqué seems to have made peace with the fact that not everyone will view him favorably. “I understand that a lot of people think that I’m a type of person. There’s freedom of speech. Everyone can think what they want. I’m very happy and I have a good time. I feel privileged,” he concluded.

Yet, Piqué remains calm with the woman he cheated on Shakira with – while Shakira’s life changed completely. She packed up, with her two kids that she shares with him, and moved to Miami. After living in Spain for so long, this must’ve been a shock to her (or maybe a relief.) It’s great he has found peace, but one has to wonder: At what cost?
