Latinos are multifaceted, multicultural, and multitalented people. Hailing from all across Latin America, the artistry is diverse and the Latin Grammys brings some of the talent together every year. Every year, right off the heels of Hispanic Heritage Month, comes one of the largest awards shows for Latin music, the Latin Grammys. Here are some reasons why the Latin Grammys is one of the best awards shows out there.

The Latin Grammys are Young and Still Have So Much to Offer

Started in 2000, the Latina Grammys “first primarily Spanish-language prime-time program carried on network television. As the GRAMMY Awards, the Latin GRAMMYs recognize artistic and technical excellence in the recording arts and sciences by peer vote. It has already come to represent the height of achievement in Latin recording.”

Ozuna

Yes, Ozuna and his 2018 acoustic performance of his breakout hit Frasante, which flowed right into Única; proving that Dominicans can take you from heartbreak and sorrow to dancing and hype all in a matter of seconds.

The 2017 Puerto Rican Tribute Opening Number

Puerto Rico’s own, Residente opened up the 2017 Latin Grammys with a moving and emotional performance dedicated to Latin countries – especially Puerto Rico – whom had been devastated by natural disasters that year. In 2017 Puerto Rico experienced hurricane Maria. Hurricane Maria was a category 5 strength storm that rocked the small island. Puerto Rico is still politically, culturally, and emotionally recovering from the storm.

The Drama

This year the number of artists were upset and felt snubbed by the Latin Grammys. They felt that they were being left out of the nominations because of the type of music they make. Artists like Bad Bunny and J. Balvin posted images on Instagram, which featured an outline of the Grammys’ statue with an X over it. The text on the image stated, “Sin Reggaetón No hay Latin Grammys.”

The Tributes

Who can forget the amazing Mambo tribute by the esteemed Black Cuban Mambo Pianist Bebo Valdes and his fellow Black Cuban, Cachao on the Upright Bass, no one! It was too good to forget. They rocked the house with their talent and artistry and truly showed the beauty of Mambo music.  There was also the Celia Cruz tribute and the Juan Gabriel tribute that remembered some of Latin music’s finest contributors.

They Are Celebrating 20 Years this Year

Everyone knows that anniversary’s make for the best celebrations! This year the Latin Grammys are turning 20 and I’m sure they will have amazing performances in store for viewers.

There are a ton of great award shows out there showing the talent and artistry of creative people but the Latin Grammys are one of our favorites. You can’t beat the night filled with tributes, drama, culture, and celebration on one stage.
