Red lipstick is such a classic makeup product. It gives women the sense of being fierce, independent, and yet timeless and feminine. It has also been a Latina celebs’ beauty staple for decades, seen on Old Hollywood stars such as Dolores del Rio and Lupe Velez during the 1930s and ‘40s, on Chicana Pachucas in the 1940s and ‘50s, and worn ever since when a Latinx woman wanted to feel glamorous, strong, and confident.
Other Latina celebs who have iconically rocked the striking red shade include Maria Montez, Frida Kahlo, Selena, Celia Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, and Sonia Sotomayor, who wore red nails to her confirmation hearings as a Supreme Court Justice, serving as inspiration years later for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to wear red lips and hoops to her Congressional swearing-in ceremony.
Lip+hoops were inspired by Sonia Sotomayor, who was advised to wear neutral-colored nail polish to her confirmation hearings to avoid scrutiny. She kept her red.
Next time someone tells Bronx girls to take off their hoops, they can just say they’re dressing like a Congresswoman. https://t.co/eYN5xYFcTE

Red lipstick is simply a lip color that will forever be found in the makeup bags of Latinas everywhere. It has gone from being a beauty statement to a statement on identity, feminism, independence, rebellion, and a refusal to be casual and “blend in.” That’s why we wanted to highlight fifteen iconic Latinas and fill you in on their favorite shades of red lipstick — including where to buy them.
AOC didn’t walk into Congress shy and wanting to blend in with everyone else. She made it a point to stand out and represent her Latinx identity and her Afro-Latinx roots. Ocasio-Cortez did this by wearing hoop earrings, and bright red lipstick, in the vein of Sonia Sotomayor refusing to wear anything other than red nails when becoming a Supreme Court Justice. That epic shade of red lipstick Alexandria wore is Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso.

Zoe Saldana is an Afro-Latina celeb who loves to wear a fierce red lip. For the premiere tour of Star Trek Into Darkness, she wore Laura Mercier’s Creme Colour Smooth Lip in Hollywood. Other rouge lipsticks she has sported include a “sultry” red lipstick from Tom Ford, a “candy apple shade” by Givenchy, Givenchy’s Rouge Interdit Illicit Raspberry No. 20, Guerlain’s Rouge Automatique in Vega, and Guerlain’s Rouge Automatique in Liu.

Sofia Vergara is more known for wearing her signature mauve lipstick for daytime. She has been known to glam it up with a classic red lip when the occasion calls for it. Like her fairytale wedding to Joe Manganiello, to celebrate the loving day, Sofia wore CoverGirls’s Sofia in Love, a custom “dark red” shade made especially for the star. While you can’t purchase Sofia in Love, you can purchase a CoverGirl dupe found by Popsugar called Amazing Auburn.

Selena Quintanilla Perez
Selena Quintanilla Perez’s iconic look included lipstick in a bold red shade. Her favorite lipstick to wear was Chanel Brick (02 Indice Brique), which has since been discontinued. Beauty blogger Ev Curl Gurl found a dupe that replicates Chanel Brick–Elizabeth Arden 02 Brick. She also found that Como La Flor, from the MAC Selena collection, is also very similar to Selena’s Chanel shade. A third dupe is Sephora Rouge Lipstick in Passion Red.

Another Selena who has made glamorous red lipstick a part of her look is Selena Gomez. When the Latina celeb spoke to Bustle about launching her beauty company Rare Beauty, she mentioned her favorite lipstick in the collection–the matte finish red, Inspire.

You may have seen supermodel Adriana Lima wearing a bold red lip, on runways, on red carpets, in magazines, and more. When she spoke to Elle Canada, Lima dropped her beauty secrets, including her “number one red” lipstick–Siren in Scarlet by Maybelline. She described the hue as “a little cherry red.”

Salma Hayek is a powerhouse who is strong, successful, and sexy. It’s no surprise, then, that she reaches for a bold red lipstick on the regular. Another Latina celeb who wears red lipstick and has also created a special red shade for L’Oreal is Eva Longoria. Her red lip color for the Pure Reds limited edition collection was called Eva’s Red and was designed in 2014 to resemble “urban chic brick red lips.” Luckily, you can still nab the pretty matte shade online.
Available at amazon.com, $17.98 (pack of 2 lipsticks)
When Frida Kahlo wore red lipstick, it married the concepts of femininity and strength. In addition to including red lips in her self-portraits, she sported the rouge hue in photos, as well as out and about. Her favorite lipstick was Revlon’s Everything’s Rosy. Revlon recommends Fire & Ice, another vintage Revlon lipstick shade, as an alternative for recreating Kahlo’s signature look.

Wonder Woman proved you don’t have to lose your femininity in order to fight crime and be a superhero. Lynda Carter saved the world, often wearing a fabulous shade of red lipstick, and continues to wear the color when she isn’t being Wonder Woman. She told W that her favorite lipstick is Chanel’s Long Wearing Lipstick in #7501. We also found several ‘80s Maybelline lipstick ads that Carter modeled in (she was also their Beauty and Fashion Director), where she wore red lipstick. A newer Maybelline shade we can recommend for a red lip that could take on the world is Red for All, part of their “universally flattering” Color Sensational Made for All line.

Maria Montez was one of Old Hollywood’s biggest Latina stars. Known as the Queen of Technicolor, she wowed on the screen and off, often in red lipstick. While we couldn’t find a personal favorite red lipstick of Montez’s, we did find a 1943 ad for Max Factor Tru-Color Lipstick in which she modeled the latest red lip hues. A great 1940s red lipstick dupe is Besame Cosmetics’ Victory Red, which pays homage to 1941.

J-Lo will forever be associated with a nude lip and golden glow, but she also makes an impact when she opts for fierce red lipstick. Jennifer Lopez created a red lip shade for the L’Oreal Collection Pure Reds, and also has worn Besame, from her Jennifer Lopez x Inglot collection; Pat McGrath’s Elson 2, and Obsessed (at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards); and Scott Barnes’ Slash, and Daddy Issues.
