BELatina’s Weekend Recap: Free School Lunches, National Dominican Day Parade, and More

From hate crimes to anti-LGBTQ sentiment, the news has been very heavy the last few weeks. However, there’s also much to be celebrated. We’re kicking off the week with this weekend’s stories of accomplishments and celebrations. From Seattle’s Pride Weekend to Daddy Yankee’s Legends Award, the Latinx community continues to make its mark worldwide. 

Seattle Latinx Pride Returns

Founded by Somos Seattle in 2017, the fourth annual Seattle Latinx Pride took place this past weekend. It was filled with live performances, dancing, parades, drag shows, and food.

According to the University of Washington Magazine, this event was created to help Latinx LGBTQ+ people connect and celebrate their identities.

Young Miko and More Performed in Puerto Rico’s Coca-Cola Music Fest

The Coca-Cola Music Festival was held in Puerto Rico for the first time ever this past Saturday and Sunday. The lineup consisted of well-established and emerging Latin urban music artists such as Prince Royce, Cosculluela, Danny Ocean, Miky Woodz, Llane, Lyanno, Alejo, Eix, Cauty, Chris Andrew, Raino, and Young Miko. 

The festival, produced by Paco López, was a big hit – coming just weeks after Bad Bunny’s last-minute performance in La Isla del Encanto.

California to be the First State to Serve Free Lunch at Schools

Through the Universal Meals Program, which is part of Assembly Bill 130, California is set to provide free lunch for school students. The state now requires public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools to provide two meals  – at no charge –  during each school day.

The free lunches will go into effect in the 2022-2023 school year. 

Bad Bunny Supports Olympic Rifleist, Yarimar Mercado Martinez

Yarimar Mercado Martinez, representing Puerto Rico in Olympic Shooting events, is set to compete in the upcoming Olympics. She competed in Río de Janeiro (2016) and Tokyo (2020). In an unforeseen manner, Bad Bunny’s foundation, Good Bunny Foundation, provided financial aid to the Olympian. Thanks to this, Martinez was able to purchase a new rifle that she can use in the upcoming Olympic Games.

It’s great to see two outstanding representatives of Puerto Rican culture stand united!

National Dominican Day Parade Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

For the first time in three years, since the pandemic started, the National Dominican Day Parade in New York City had no restrictions. Going back to its roots, the parade counted on lots of music, dancing, and delicious food. 

New York has the largest population of Dominicans in all of the United States. 

Daddy Yankee to Receive Legend Award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation

At this year‘s Hispanic Heritage Awards, Daddy Yankee is set to receive the 2022 Legend Award during the 35th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards. The award ceremony will be held on September 30, 2022. 

Daddy Yankee, el cangri, the Reggaeton legend, is currently performing his last tour as he will retire shortly after.
