We have officially passed the first anniversary of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While things aren’t as gloomy as they were this time last year, until COVID-19 is officially no longer a threat, we’ll still be sitting at home, eating from home, dating from home, and working from home. That means we’ll still be dealing with the dreaded Zoom meeting.

At this point, we’ve all become so well-acquainted with Zoom that we could probably write a book about the ins-and-outs of this life-saving communication program. And while we know a ton about the technical side of the application, there’s still a lot to learn about how to look, well, good on camera. It’s been a year, and we’re still sick of seeing ourselves on screen during meetings! Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of Zoom meeting tricks that will be sure to make you look like a total boss in your next meeting.

Get familiar with your video settings.

Alright, this zoom meeting trick may be obvious to some, but to those of you who are still unaware of Zoom’s video settings, these functions may be lifesavers. After you navigate to the settings menu (the cog symbol on the upper right of your home screen), navigate to the Video setting on the left menu. From here, you can adjust your camera for low light or (our favorite) “touch up my appearance.” The latter option gives the slightest hazy-effect that can blur out a pimple or under-eye bags.

Experiment with (classy) Zoom backgrounds.

Zoom backgrounds can be used for good, or they can be used for evil. How many of us have rolled our eyes at the workplace goofball logging into the morning meeting from outer space? But if you want to experiment with different backgrounds and keep it classy, this trick is for you. Choose more minimalistic options like “Perlification,” “Scrapbook,” and “Don’t Leaf.” Like before, navigate to the settings menu and select the “Background & Filters” option from the left-panel menu.

Invest in a better-quality webcam.

If you’re serious about committing to official boss-lady vibes, think about splurging on a high-quality webcam–or at least a better quality one. Try brands like Logitech and Razer Kiyo–both favorites of both vloggers and gamer streamers. You’ll never have to deal with grainy images again!

Get your lighting right!

This tip may seem obvious, but it’s a piece of advice worth repeating: don’t discount the benefits of good lighting. Here’s a quick Zoom Lighting 101 Guide: 1). Do not sit in front of a window or a bright light. 2) See number one. Seriously though, folks, facing towards a bright light will illuminate your face and eradicate the chances of unflattering and obscuring backlighting. If you’re stuck in a room without windows, consider buying a cheap ring light!

Put some effort into your appearance.

This trick isn’t technical, but a practical one: don’t look like a slob. We know we’ve all been stuck inside for a year, and sweatpants have become most of our work uniforms, but you’d be surprised how much putting a little effort into what you look like can transform you from Summer Intern to Total Boss™. No, you don’t have to go full glam but do brush your hair. Do slap on some tinted moisturizer and some bold lipstick. And if you’re not ready to sacrifice comfort for professionalism, opt for cozy work leisure pieces like a sweater blazer or an elevated shirt dress.
