There’s no doubt that the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been huge in matters of Latine representation, where Marvel used Indigenous traditions, language, and connotations to portray the movie’s characters and their surroundings.

Speaking of the sequel’s characters, Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, who plays Namor, has been turning heads for his role. Most recently, he was named one of 2022’s Breakthrough Entertainers by The Associated Press (AP).

Huerta was born in Ecatepec de Morelos, Mexico, and has had several participations in movies and shows like El infierno, Colosio: El asesinato, Narcos: México, Los 33, The Forever Purge, and Capadocia.

The mexicano constantly speaks on the lack of representation of Latines and Indigenous people in movies, TV shows, and advertisements. Even a Latin American country like Mexico made him question the possibility of participating in the acting world.

When I was 16 my father insisted to me to become an actor, he pushed me to take workshops, said Huerta. The workshop was for two or three weeks, and I spent nine months. I liked it a lot but, (it) never was my life plan, it was just a hobby, Huerta told AP.

This year’s AP honorees are “next-level” entertainers

“They worked hard, with the rewards coming slowly but surely. Then something came along — often a key role or sometimes a cluster, maybe an album — and it all became next-level, a shift triggering where-did-you-come-from vibes,” AP stated

Aside from Tenoch Huerta, eight entertainers were selected by the publication, including Sadie Sink, Stephanie Hsu, Joaquina Kalukango, Iman Vellani, Daryl McCormack, Toby Nwigwe, Simone Ashley, and Danielle Deadwyler.

“I don’t know how my life is gonna be changed from this point on, but I hope this movie affects the people, affects the kinds and if the kids are able to look at themselves on the mirror and feel proud,” the actor told AP. “If they are able to look at them and feel proud of themselves, for me, that’s perfect.”

What an awesome year for Latine and indigenous representation! (Yet, we are still ways off from closing the gap that exists in representation.)
