To talk about Bad Bunny is to talk about one of the most important phenomena in the contemporary culture of the 21st century. Although it may sound academic, the truth is that Benito has reformulated what we understand by popularity and success.
In his trajectory as a Latin trap/reggaeton artist, the Puerto Rican singer is today the most listened artist on the Spotify platform, with more than 9.1 billion plays on the platform.
Since 2016, the year of the beginning of the artist’s career, Benito Martinez has managed to get many of his songs on the U.S. Hot Latin Songs chart. In 2018, he earned the coveted top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart alongside J Balvin and Cardi B with the single “I like it,” the same one with which he earned the first Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.
With the album “YHLQMDLG,” Bad Bunny achieved millions of plays, making it the album with the most plays. The album received Grammy Award nominations for Best Latin Pop or Urban Pop Album. In addition, “YHLQMDLG” achieved a milestone not seen in over 27 years on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. With “YHLQMDLG,” the Puerto Rican artist surpassed Gloria Estefan’s record for the most weeks at No. 1 on the chart.
Before the worldwide quarantine lockdown, he was part of the Super Bowl halftime show with Shakira. In addition, he was the first urban Latin artist to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

But for Benito, who is promoting his new album “Un Verano Sin Ti,” the most important achievement of his career is representing Puerto Rico.
“I keep making music from here to the walls. I just want people to feel like they’re really here on the island, in the Caribbean,” Bad Bunny said in a recent interview with Apple Music. “The best part of all my accomplishments is when people say, ‘yo, but he’s from Puerto Rico.'”
“I just want people to understand that you can be Puerto Rican and be a star,” he added. “I just want people to remember me as a normal guy. You don’t have to change anything about your culture. You don’t have to change anything about yourself.”
And it looks like that formula has paid off big time for the singer.
Now, Benito will be playing Marvel superhero El Muerto, which he calls “one of the biggest things in my life.”
“I have to make the Latino people proud, the wrestlers, I can’t fail,” he assured.
