The long-awaited Academy Award nominations are here, and they did not disappoint.

As Slate explained, for the first time in more than a decade, this year’s Best Picture nominees have been set in advance in 10 slots, rather than ranging from five to ten depending on the breadth of Academy voters’ enthusiasm.

Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were released Tuesday morning, and “The Power of the Dog” appears to be the favorite.

The film has garnered a total of 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jane Campion, and acting nominations for star Benedict Cumberbatch and supporting actors Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

“Dune” follows with a total of 10 nominations, including Best Picture, but the film missed out in the directing and acting categories.

“West Side Story” and “Belfast” earned seven nominations, while “King Richard” was nominated in six categories. These three will also compete for Best Picture in a category that includes a total of 10 nominees; “CODA,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Drive My Car,” “Licorice Pizza,” “and “Nightmare Alley” round out the list.

However, we at BELatina celebrate the Academy’s recognition of two of our favorite films: “West Side Story” and “Encanto.”

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the classic has earned nominations for best picture, best director, best-supporting actress, best cinematography, best production design, best costume design, and best sound.

“Encanto” was nominated for best animated feature film, best original song, and best original score.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC on Sunday, March 27.
