Latin America lost one of the reasons it laughed for decades.

Chabelo has left our world. He was 88. Thankfully, he left his memories of comedic genius alive and well. Xavier López, better known as Chabelo, became a household name for many families from all over Latin America, especially in Mexico. He had a knack for family-friendly comedy and had won the hearts of numerous households, one skit at a time.

He was the host of “En Familia con Chabelo,” Mexico’s longest-running television show.

It is no surprise that his death is bringing communities together to mourn collectively. Known for wearing costumes that resembled children’s clothing, he was the familiar face many people saw on Sundays for countless years.

There are so many things Chabelo did and it’s only fair we honor him by remembering the legacy he left behind.

Though Mexicans and other Latinos experienced his comedic talent first-hand for decades, there was more to Chabelo. So, let’s take a look at some things you might’ve not known about the beloved TV personality.

He was not born in Mexico

Xavier López, or Chabelo, was born on February 17th in Chicago, Illinois. His family, however, moved back to Mexico and settled in León, Guanajuato shortly after.

Chabelo was drafted into the U.S. Army

López was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. However, the conflict ended before he was deployed and spent his short service on a military base in California. Once his service was up, he returned to Mexico.

He tried to pursue a career in medicine

Upon his return from serving in the Korean War, Chabelo tried to go into the medical field. He had hopes of becoming a doctor at some point. However, while he was in school, he picked up a job at the Televisa television network working as an assistant. It was through his work there that he found a passion for acting as he would fill in for actors from time to time. This was the beginning of his famed character.

Chabelo was not a stranger to breaking records

On December 30th, 2012, “En Familia con Chabelo” was awarded a Guinness Record for its 44 years of uninterrupted broadcast. López was also awarded another Guinness Record for portraying the Chabelo character for over 57 years.

He did more beyond ‘En Familia con Chabelo’

Chabelo was all over the place, in a good way. He, for instance, was featured in more than thirty films and recorded more than thirty albums. He also produced many programs like “La Escuelita VIP,” and “Los Simuladores.”

We will miss the multi-faceted Latino star.

López was survived by several children and his wife.
