Frankeli Bencosme, producer and author of the first Dominican mystery and suspense film “Andrea”, has sadly passed away.

“Andrea,” released in 2005, is based on the true story of a girl in the Dominican Republic who unleashes an evil spirit after removing a cross from a sacred tomb. The spirit relentlessly terrorizes Andrea and her family. Witch doctors and spiritual healers become the only hope for a normal life again.

The film starred Any Ferreiras as Andrea, Hensy Pichardo as Manuel (Andrea’s father), Elvira Grullón as Flora (Andrea’s grandmother), and Anthony Ferreiras, an evil spirit seeking revenge.

Bencosme had various roles in its production. Aside from being the author and producer, he also led the photography portion of it as well as the special effects.

The film was well-received by its audience. Thanks to “Andrea,” the Dominican Republic was able to participate in new film categories and inspired other filmmakers to follow in Bencosme’s footsteps.

The talent and execution of the film earned Bencosme the Audience Award at the New York International Independent Film Festival in 2006. The event was held in Miami that year.

As per the Gal Times, the Dominican filmmaker had been in the hospital for several days. He dealt with pulmonary issues and complications from diabetes while there. Unfortunately, these health problems proved to be fatal.

Prior to that, Bencosme had been confined to a wheelchair and did not have mobility as a result of his health complications.

According to Listin Diario, the body will be veiled in his native community. It was confirmed that his brother, Roger Bencosme, will attend the services. He played a crucial role in “Andrea” as the film’s director.

His contributions to the Dominican film industry will forever be remembered.

May he rest in peace and may his family find peace during this moment.
