The Golden Globes Awards are back. This year’s award ceremony is, however, being examined more thoroughly considering that the 80th annual Golden Globes ceremony was not televised in 2022 due to a lack of diversity.

Nevertheless, the first batch of its presenters gave a glimpse at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) apparent commitment to diversity. Influential Black and Brown figures are featured in the list, which is a great start to closing the representation gap in media.

The list of presenters features three of our favorite Latine stars, such as Michaela Jaé (MJ) Rodriguez, Colman Domingo, and Ana de Armas.

Who are the presenters?

Though many in the Latine community are familiar with their names, it is important to understand the significance of their participation.

First off, there’s Dominican artist Michaela Jaé or MJ. She is best known for her roles in “Pose” and “Nurse Jackie.” In 2022, Rodriguez became the first trans-Latina to win a Golden Globes Award under the “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series” category.

Colman Domingo, who has Central American lineage, understands the value of Latine representation in media. He recently spoke about the pride he feels to be showcased and represent his family on this platform. The Afro-Latino won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor Drama for his role as Ali in the HBO series “Euphoria.”

Last but not least, the Cuban-Spanish actress, Ana de Armas, is listed as a presenter as well. She made plenty of headlines in 2022 for her role as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde,” which led her to be nominated for an AACTA International Award.

Her talent was showcased in the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Awards, USA, for her roles in “Knives Out,” (2019) and “Blade Runner 2049” (2017). De Armas won Best Supporting Actress in the aforementioned Award ceremony in 2021.

Is this enough representation?

The HFPA, which is responsible for distributing the Golden Globes Awards, is walking on thin ice after it became public knowledge that they had not had any Black members in two decades. Moreover, any presence of diversity was also scattered and minimal. This caused NBC not to televise the award ceremony in 2022.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a 2022 statement. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Though it is evident more representation has been added, many are wondering if it’s enough to get celebrities to show up to the award ceremony. At this point, we will have to wait and see. The rest of the presenters will be announced later this week.

The 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony is scheduled to air live at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 10 on NBC and Peacock.
