Jenna Ortega is no stranger to the pressures of fame, but what she encountered on social media left her grappling with far more than the usual celebrity spotlight. The 21-year-old actress, known for her breakout role in Netflix’s Wednesday, recently opened up about the disturbing reality of explicit AI-generated images and how they drove her to leave the platform formerly known as Twitter.

What Did Jenna Ortega Say

Ortega revealed in an interview with The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast that the situation became unbearable. She recounted how, after the release of Wednesday in 2022, she was bombarded with fake pornographic images of herself. “It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong. It’s disgusting,” she said, reflecting on how these digitally fabricated images impacted her. “It made me feel uncomfortable. It’s awful.” Ortega ultimately decided to delete her account, choosing to protect her mental well-being over enduring the harassment.

The young actress shared a chilling anecdote from even earlier in her career. When she was just 12 years old, the first direct message she received was an unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals. This unsettling experience marked the beginning of a long and distressing relationship with social media that would eventually lead her to step away from certain platforms entirely. Despite the fame that followed roles in Scream and The Fallout, Ortega found the toxic environment too overwhelming.

Her concerns about social media extend beyond her own experience. In a conversation on the podcast, she also reflected on the broader impact of platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram on people her age. “Social media, what it does to anyone our age, it’s such a comparing game. It almost influences bandwagon mentality. It’s very manipulative,” she noted in another interview as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series in 2023. The pressures of growing up under constant scrutiny had forced her to reevaluate her relationship with these platforms.

Ortega’s experience is, unfortunately, part of a broader trend that affects young women in particular. While many of these images were eventually removed for violating X’s policies, the damage had already been done.

A Bright Future Ahead Despite the Horrifying Experience

Jenna Ortega, however, isn’t just retreating from the negativity. With her star power continuing to rise, she is now using her platform to speak out against the perils of fame and the dangers of AI manipulation. Beyond Wednesday, Ortega will next be seen in the highly anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice alongside Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, cementing her place in Hollywood’s next generation of leading actresses.

Despite the success, she remains acutely aware of how fame can be a double-edged sword, especially for someone as young as she is. Reflecting on her career, Ortega admits to feeling conflicted. “My prefrontal cortex isn’t even fully there yet,” she said. “I want to be making the mistakes and learning from them, falling on my face.” That drive for growth, for the freedom to fail, remains a powerful force for an actress navigating the unpredictable currents of stardom.
