Not that Latinos haven’t had enough talent in previous years, but 2021 is undoubtedly one of the best years for Latino productions. Between animated films, biopics, and musicals, the Hispanic community has everything to sweep the Oscars 2022.

And not only in the United States.

Last year, Latin Americans left their mark on film and television like never before. From “West Side Story” to “Being the Ricardos,” here are the movies with Latino talent that could make the 2022 Oscars a special edition.

“West Side Story”

Steven Spielberg’s version of “West Side Story” recontextualizes the classic that made Rita Moreno famous, this time hand in hand with Walt Disney Co.

The new adaptation of Tony Kushner’s screenplay stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno.

The film won the Golden Globe for best musical, best actress in a motion picture, and best supporting actress.

“Encanto”

The film set in magical Colombia follows the story of a Latin American family and takes another look at the traditions and customs of the region. Inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s magical realism and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film won the Golden Globe for the best animated feature film.

“In The Heights”

Directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Miranda, “In the Heights” was definitely the most discussed musical in 2021. With a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the Broadway musical adaptation could snag a statuette at the Academy Awards.

“Cinderella”

Another musical with Latin talent has been the pop version of the classic fairy tale “Cinderella,” featuring Cuba’s Camila Cabello in the lead role.

“Eternals”

One of the most important moments in cinema with Latin talent was the arrival of “Eternals” to the big screen. In the film, Mexico’s Salma Hayek led a cast of immortal characters recognized for their wide diversity.

“Being the Ricardos”

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, “Being the Ricardos” brings to the screen the story of iconic Cuban television actor Dezi Arnaz, husband, and costar of Lucille Ball on the show “I Love Lucy.”

“El Prófugo (The Intruder)”

Director Natalia Meta’s Argentine psycho-sexual thriller has been selected to compete for Best International Feature at the 94th edition of the Academy Awards. “The Intruder,” tells the story of Inés, who works as a dubbing actress and sings in a choir in Buenos Aires. A traumatic episode will change her life forever.

“El Gran Movimiento (The Great Movement)”

Director Kiro Russo’s Bolivian film follows Elder, a miner who begins to suffer from a strange respiratory disease. “The Great Movement” won the Special Orizzonti Jury Prize at the last edition of the Venice Film Festival.

“Blanco en Blanco (White on White)”

“White on White” is the second film by Spanish-Chilean director Théo Court and is the official submission for an international feature film representing Chile. “White on White” takes place in 19th century Chile and follows the story of a photographer who travels to the extreme south of Chile to take pictures of the marriage of a powerful landowner.

“Memoria”

An audience favorite has been “Memoria” from director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, representing Colombia in the 94th edition of the Academy Awards.

Other films include “Private Desert” by Aly Muritiba (Brazil), “Clara Sola” by Nathalie Álvarez Mesén (Costa Rica), “Holy Beasts” by Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas (Dominican Republic), and “The Inner Glow” representing Venezuela, among others.
