Hoy será bonito (today will be beautiful) for thousands of Shakira and Karol G fans.

In less than 24 hours since the release of “TQG,” Colombian powerhouses Shakira and Karol G broke the internet. Within eight hours, the music video has garnered over six million views already.

The song, which is an acronym for “te quedó grande,” is, without a doubt, the next anthem for anyone getting over their ex. In fact, both artists made references to their own past lovers.

Shakira, for example, doubled down on her discontentment with Gerard Piqué by singing about how she’s better off without him. Roughly translated from Spanish, this is what she sings:

“I’ve forgotten about what we lived together and that’s what has offended you, my life has even got better, I swear you’re no longer welcome, and what your girlfriend threw at me, that doesn’t annoy me or make me laugh.” She also explained how she’s now the embodiment of the triple ‘m’: Más buena, más dura, más leve (much hotter, much tougher, much lighter.)

Meanwhile, Karol sings about someone who left but still views her stories despite that person having another girlfriend. This could potentially be about Anuel AA. However, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, she says that she no longer houses the feelings she originally had when she started working on “TQG.”

It’s great to see both these Latinas working together considering Karol G had been after a collaboration with Shakira for a while. Still, Shakira is an icon and worth all the wait. Karol G has now become the third woman Shakira has ever collaborated with.

The many references in ‘TQG’

As millions attempt to learn the lyrics to “TQG,” there’s also something else to take into consideration: the references within the music video.

The music video, aside from an immediate success, is filled with several nuggets. Here are some of the ones we’ve found so far.

It hints at ‘The Truman Show’

For one, it starts off by showing a scene that is uncannily familiar to the 1998 film, “The Truman Show.” It is important to note that this movie’s main point is about someone living a lie.

Honoring Beyonce and Rihanna

The music video also acts as an homage to the two other women superstars Shakira has worked with, Beyonce and Rihanna.

Throughout the music video, Shakira and Karol G are seen recreating the choreography from previous music videos, “Beautiful Liar” and “Can’t Remember to Forget You.”

“Beautiful Liar” was a collaboration between Shakira and Beyonce, and “Can’t Remember to Forget You” was a single created with Rihanna.

Aside from this tribute, Shakira and Karol G worked more nostalgia by bringing the dance moves seen on “La Tortura.” It is speculated that moves from “She Wolf” and “Hips Don’t Lie” are also present.

If anything, this was a way to let the world know that Shakira has been relevant and continues to be relevant – even as she steps into a new era. Karol G is known for giving legendary artists their flowers and through “TQG” she has done it again.

“TQG” was released the same day as Karol G’s new album “Mañana Será Bonito.”
