Argentina Prosecutor Blames Drug Impairment for Liam Payne’s Fatal Fall

British singer Liam Payne’s death in Argentina last month was not ruled a suicide, according to authorities in Buenos Aires. Officials announced that Payne’s fatal fall from his hotel balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel on October 16 was caused by the effects of a combination of drugs he had taken, dispelling earlier speculations.

What Happened in Argentina?

The prosecutor overseeing the case confirmed this determination, attributing Payne’s fall to drug-related impairment. An initial autopsy found multiple substances in his system, including the synthetic drugs known as “pink cocaine.” Evidence from Payne’s hotel suite — drug paraphernalia and a suspicious soap box — led police to investigate how the drugs entered his possession.

The tragic incident has resulted in the arrest of three individuals: a hotel housekeeper, a friend of Payne’s, and a suspected drug dealer, all apprehended during multiple police raids. Authorities are now focusing on the individuals responsible for supplying the drugs that ultimately led to Payne’s death.

Before the Death of Liam Payne

The 31-year-old artist was staying at the CasaSur Palermo after an extended trip with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, who had recently returned to Florida. The couple had attended a concert in Buenos Aires by Payne’s former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan, two weeks prior.

Payne’s struggles with addiction were well-documented. He had openly discussed his journey to sobriety, sharing in a YouTube video last year that he had completed a 100-day rehabilitation program. Friends and family believed he had maintained his sobriety leading up to his passing, with those close to him noting he seemed in “good spirits.” The reason for his relapse remains unknown.

Payne leaves behind his parents, Geoff and Karen, his sisters Nicola and Ruth, and his 7-year-old son, Bear, who he shares with ex-partner Cheryl Cole. Plans are reportedly underway to bring him back to the UK, where he will be laid to rest in the coming days.
