Latina Equal Pay Day: Beatriz Acevedo on Empowering Latinas Financially

It’s Latina Equal Pay Day and we must use this day to remind everyone how much work there is left to do. Thankfully, our community is blessed to have countless Latinas advocating for the end of gender-based wage disparity, and one of those Latinas is Beatriz Acevedo.

Acevedo stands as a light among the darkness of unjust wages, a trailblazer who has shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for future generations of Latine leaders. With an impressive portfolio as an Emmy award-winning producer, community builder, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, this mexicana has become a driving force behind the empowerment of Latinas, particularly in finance.

In an interview with BELatina News, Beatriz shared her insights on Latina Equal Pay Day, a crucial movement highlighting the stark gender wage gap faced by Latinas. As the CEO of SUMA Wealth, her latest business venture and a groundbreaking digital platform designed to educate and uplift the Latine community financially, she is not just advocating for change; she’s actively creating it.

Financial Wisdom and Empowerment

At the core of SUMA Wealth, Beatriz leads the charge in providing essential financial education and tools tailored to the Latine community. SUMA Wealth isn’t just a platform; it’s a movement, aiming to bridge the gender wage gap and empower Latinas to take control of their financial destinies. Beatriz, along with her all-Latina, dynamic team, including Daniela Corrente as Chief Strategy Officer and Mary Hernandez as COO and Co-Founder, has forged a new path.

SUMA Wealth is not just a platform; it’s a mission. They are rewriting the narrative for Latinas, empowering them with the knowledge and tools they need to achieve financial success.

“We are now in the process of launching a SUMA jefa business boot camp where we are going to talk a lot about negotiation. Negotiating your salary, negotiating your stock options, negotiating your bonuses, and all of that because, obviously, it’s very important,” Beatriz remarked, her passion for the cause evident in every word.

Changing the Narrative: One Latina at a Time

With unmatched determination, this jefa champions the next generation of Latine leaders, challenging stereotypes and reshaping narratives. She emphasized the importance of embracing one’s identity proudly, irrespective of the room or situation as key to getting desired results.

“I had the opposite reaction than most people who see that they’re the only ones in a room,” she said. “My reaction was, ‘Oh, my God, this is amazing. Like Nobody here is like me. So, one, I know better. They should fund me because I know my community better than anybody. I have all the data.’”

It is evident that Acevedo has many superpowers. One of them is raising capital for her business ventures. Still, being a Latina is also one of her best attributes.

“I am, obviously, a very proud Latina. And I also I lean a lot into my Latinidad, right? I wear it everywhere,” she said, her voice filled with conviction.

“And that gave me a really incredible sense of swagger. I always say, ‘Walk into these rooms with white man swagger and confidence.’ Acevedo explained that her confidence stemmed from being sure of her expertise and knowing she truly understood what she was trying to build for her community.

“It made me very comfortable to be me, to be the only one, to be the one who was the loud Latina with using the hands a lot and wearing the hoops and wearing the embroidered clothing.”

Acevedo shared invaluable insights garnered from her entrepreneurial journey as well. She spoke about the importance of strategic partnerships and staying true to one’s core values. As Latinas, we are sometimes so eager to get to the next steps as quickly as possible, but that can come with unpleasant repercussions.

“Pick a co-founder that’s as important as picking a husband or a wife or a partner because so much of your time is spent there and making a wrong decision is very, very costly,” she advised thoughtfully. “Don’t take money that’s not aligned to your values and to your core and to what you believe in because that’s also going to hurt you in the long term.”

Speaking Up on Latina Equal Pay Day

Latina Equal Pay Day holds a mirror to the stark realities faced by Latinas in the workforce. The savvy Latina businesswoman highlighted the significance of this day, not just as a statistic, but as a call to action, urging the community to raise their voices and demand the equality they deserve.

“It is very un-serving to our community for us to continue to not use our voice and keep our head down,” she said.

Acevedo understands that there are a lot of systemic issues that work against Latinas getting fair wages. However, she took the time to explain how there are other factors that contribute to this injustice – and it’s not because of the jobs we hold.

“It’s not because of the jobs that we have. If you think about it, a Latina with a high school degree versus a Latina with a college degree, the wage gap is wider if you have a college degree.”

“So, this is not because we have low-paying jobs or because we’re uneducated. The more educated you are, the wider the gap is.”
