Latinas continue to break barriers, and we at BELatina are proud to see actresses from our community step forward to be the representation that is so lacking in television.
This time we celebrate the news that Latina trans actress Talisa García will join the cast of the Disney+ series “Willow,” becoming the first trans actress chosen by Lucasfilm.
As reported by Screen Rant, García will play a queen and the mother of Tony Revolori’s lead character in the upcoming Disney+ series, “Willow.”
Lucasfilm’s decision to cast García is not only historic for the production company but the first time in Disney history that an openly trans person will play a cisgender role.
The upcoming project, which is expected to air this year on Disney+, is based on the 1988 film Willow, envisioned by Star Wars creator George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, People magazine explained.
Willow starred Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood, a sorceress determined to save the life of a young girl, Elora Danan, being pursued by the queen. Following the original film, Lucas commissioned Chris Claremont to write a three-part series of novels set 15 years later.
“I feel so blessed and honored to be part of the Willow family; this is quite literally the definition of ‘a dream come true,'” García wrote on her Instagram post. “When I was at school I used to drive my teachers crazy, they were always trying to get me to concentrate in class and stop looking out the window daydreaming. It must have been so frustrating for them but there was a reason I was unfocused. I was in so much pain from growing up in the wrong body that I spent hours living in a fantasy world where I was a princess or, in my more daring flights of fancy, even a queen, in a magical Disney production. I would never have dared to tell anyone of these ideas back then as they seemed so impossible, so ridiculously out of reach but regardless, I never stopped dreaming.”
“Here I am, all these years later, an actual queen in a magical Lucasfilm & Disney production,” she continued. “That wild fantasy land that I used to disappear into for escape and comfort is now a reality…so, from one daydreamer to all the others out there…don’t stop! Dreams do come true. Reach for those stars, and eventually, you’ll find yourself flying higher than you ever thought you could.”
