One of the historically male-dominated spaces has always been video games. In fact, classic designs often only incorporated hypersexualized female characters, even when they had active roles in the story.

Let alone Latina characters.

However, this seems to be finally changing.

The popular video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA) will now feature a Latina protagonist.

This was reported in an extensive report by Jason Schreier for Bloomberg, who explained that players will play as a woman for the first time in the history of the series.

Apparently, GTA VI will feature two main characters, and Bonnie and Clyde will inspire the story. The last installment of the series featured three protagonists — Michael, Trevor, and Franklin.

GTA VI, which will be released in a year, will be set in a fictionalized version of Miami and its surroundings.

As Complex explained, Rockstar Games’ decision is part of its effort to curb its “frat boy” culture and reduce instances of “crunch,” in which developers are forced to work overtime to meet tight deadlines. One of the ways the company has implemented the change is a new management structure and firing managers who allegedly engaged in “abusive” behavior.

Similarly, the company is attempting to wipe the slate clean after previous GTA titles were abusive and discriminatory towards women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Likewise, the company removed several transphobic jokes from the re-release of Grand Theft Auto V on modern consoles and, according to a recent game industry report, reduced its gender pay gap.
