In the not-so-distant past, “Gasolina” blared from every Spanish-language radio station, while debates about the cultural impact of “perreo” circulated freely. It was a time when gas prices were low, social media was in its infancy, and MySpace was the virtual playground for HTML coders. Reflecting on those days feels like revisiting a blissful era —where many of us witnessed the birth of reggaeton. Whether or not I was personally there is a mystery I’ll leave unsolved, but there’s no denying that 20 years of reggaeton have been nothing short of spectacular. Far from fading away, reggaeton has firmly entrenched itself as a cornerstone of Latino culture — a legacy that demands celebration. Even Spotify is joining in on the festivities.

As we approach the 20th anniversary of Daddy Yankee’s groundbreaking album Barrio Fino on July 13, it’s a moment not just to honor his legacy but also to recognize his ongoing impact on Spotify today. Released in 2004, “Barrio Fino” forever transformed the landscape of reggaeton and Latin music.

Reggaeton, a genre born from the streets of Panama in the 1990s thanks to El General and Dj Chombo, melded rhythms from dancehall, hip hop, and Caribbean music traditions. It emerged as a voice of the urban youth, addressing social issues and celebrating life in the barrios. While in Puerto Rico, Daddy Yankee became captivated by these beats and quickly rose to prominence as a pioneer. His breakthrough album, “Barrio Fino,” not only catapulted him to international fame but also solidified reggaeton’s place on the global music stage.

Daddy Yankee is a cultural force. His hits like “Gasolina” have created joyful memories for many Latinos. Even though he’s retired, his impact continues to resonate within our community, and we fully support his journey ahead.
