A new mobile tool is gaining traction among immigrant communities seeking to avoid unexpected encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The app, called ICEBlock, was created by technologist Joshua Aaron and launched in April as a real-time alert system for identifying nearby immigration activity. With a growing user base that now exceeds 20,000, ICEBlock has become especially popular in cities like Los Angeles, where large-scale enforcement operations have generated public concern.

Aaron, who has worked in the tech industry for two decades, developed the app in response to increasing immigration raids across the country. His goal was to give users a way to receive timely, location-based warnings without compromising their privacy or safety, as reported by KTLA.

Real-Time Immigration Alerts Without Personal Data

ICEBlock allows users to drop a pin on a map when they see immigration agents. Reports can include optional notes on clothing, vehicle type, or other details. Once submitted, the alert is immediately sent to users within an eight-kilometer radius. Each report expires after four hours, and users can only submit one every five minutes to avoid spam or false sightings.

The app includes a warning message stating it is meant for information and notification only. Users are reminded not to use the app to disrupt or interfere with law enforcement activity. The system was designed to help individuals make safer decisions, not to obstruct federal agents.

This App was Built for Anonymity

Unlike many apps that track personal data, ICEBlock operates without collecting names, phone numbers, or device identifiers. It is only available on iOS due to privacy concerns around Android’s data-sharing requirements. Real-time immigration reports are limited to the user’s vicinity, preventing remote or inaccurate entries.

Aaron has said the app’s design prioritizes safety and anonymity, given fears among immigrant communities about digital surveillance. ICEBlock users remain entirely anonymous, and the app is free to download and use.

A Community-Focused Safety Tool

For many, ICEBlock now functions as a digital safety net. Its structure reflects the growing demand for tools that protect personal data while offering users the chance to stay informed. By combining basic crowd-sourced reporting with built-in safeguards, the app provides a way for individuals to monitor activity in their neighborhoods without drawing attention or taking risks.

ICE officials have yet to respond to inquiries about the app. Despite that, ICEBlock continues to grow as a grassroots resource shared across networks of families, advocates, and community groups concerned about staying alert in uncertain conditions.
