Alicia Villarreal knew she was in danger. The stage lights beamed down, the crowd cheered, and in the middle of it all, she made a silent plea for help. A simple hand gesture, recognized globally as a sign of distress, revealed what had been hidden behind closed doors.

The singer has now spoken openly about the violence she says she endured in her marriage to Cruz Martínez. In an interview with Despierta América, Villarreal described an incident so severe she feared for her life. “This wasn’t just an argument. My life was at risk,” she said. Her children were home when it happened. The fear and desperation pushed her to act.

She left immediately, taking only her daughter’s car. “I left with nothing. The only thing I grabbed was my daughter’s truck… I went straight to the ER,” she recounted. According to Villarreal, Martínez physically attacked her, attempting to strangle her. It was after this, during a concert in Michoacán, that she decided to use the distress signal, hoping someone in the audience would recognize it.

Alicia Villareal Is Breaking the Silence on Gender Violence

During the interview, host Alan Tacher asked if this was the first time she had experienced violence in her relationship. Her response was careful: “Not to that extent.” She had already shared more details with Ventaneando, revealing that after the assault, Martínez took her phone and wallet, leaving her without money or identification.

Now, Villarreal is speaking up, not just for herself but for others who may be suffering in silence. She has expressed gratitude for the public’s support and stressed the importance of addressing gender violence.

Her daughter, Melenie Carmona, has also faced criticism, something Villarreal has found especially painful. “It hurts to hear what they say about my daughter. I want to scream, ‘Don’t say that,’ but it’s not time to speak out yet,” she said.

For now, Alicia Villarreal is focused on moving forward. What began as a hidden struggle has become a public stand, a call for awareness, and a reminder that no one should suffer alone.
