A quiet confidence follows Rebecca Marie Gómez into any room she enters. Known around the world as Becky G, the singer has never claimed to speak for everyone, but her voice carries particular weight for a generation of Latinas navigating their place in the United States. From her earliest days in Inglewood, California, to her chart-topping hits in Latin music, she has built a career rooted in identity and clarity of purpose.

During a visit to Madrid, Becky G told the Spanish news agency EFE that she recognizes the complexity of speaking publicly about immigration and social issues. At the same time, she affirmed that silence is not an option when her own community lives with daily fear.

According to her, “the fear of losing a few followers for shedding light on what is happening is nothing compared to the fear my community feels.”

A Personal History That Shapes Her Voice

Becky G describes herself as “a proud granddaughter of immigrants,” noting that while her parents were born in the United States, their experience was shaped by struggle and sacrifice. Both were young when they became parents, and she recalls watching them work through obstacles that left a lasting impact on how she sees her role as a public figure.

“It makes me very sad, but also, as an artist, it motivates me to show that we deserve to be happy, respected, and represented,” she said.

Her values — authenticity, empathy, and compassion — are ones she repeats often. These same qualities, she explains, have guided her professional path, especially in moments when she felt isolated within the Latin urban genre. Early in her career, she faced skepticism from industry executives who believed that space was not made for women like her. She responded by insisting on belonging anyway.

Breaking Expectations on Her Own Terms

An environment shaped Becky G’s childhood without rigid rules about what girls should do. Her father never imposed traditional ideas on her or her siblings, and their home reflected that freedom. “I played soccer, baseball, and rode motorcycles. I also did my brothers’ makeup. In our house, everything was possible,” she recalled.

This openness informed how she approached her musical evolution. Her debut leaned into English-language pop, most famously with the song Shower, which gained traction during her teenage years. Later, she pivoted toward the Latin urban scene with tracks like Mayores, embracing a more provocative tone that drew criticism, even though her male counterparts were doing the same.

“It was difficult but also fun, partly because I had that perspective to know that it’s not my fault what people are thinking,” she said. “I say what I say, and it’s not my responsibility because I’m not the mother of your children.”

Becky G Built Her Career on Self-Definition

Though others often speak of her role in shaping the Latin music scene, Becky G approaches those conversations with modesty. She avoids calling her presence in the genre transformative, but instead returns to the principle of staying true to herself. “When someone else says it, it sounds very serious, but I think my responsibility has always been to be authentic, to be who I am, without filter, fun, and bold,” she explained.

While many public figures choose neutrality today, her voice stands out precisely because it does not seek to lecture or divide. She shares her perspective from a place of experience, both personal and professional, offering a version of success that is neither sanitized nor scripted.
